Apart from anything else your post makes it pretty clear that you are referring to all stepparents, not just your step-dad. And if none in your family thought to call the police if half of what your saying is true, well then I'm speechless.interspark said:

My step parents on both sides are both really nice. I'm twenty-one and don't live at home for most of the year though, so I don't get a lot of exposure to them.
To put it simply: Your step parent isn't marrying you, they're marrying your parent. You're just extra baggage in their eyes.
Its called a stereotype and due to a large amount of movies featuring step-parents as one of the main conflicts, its being widely accepted as an untrue fact. Are there bad step-parents? Yes. Are all Step-parents bad? No.
After moving in together with my mum my step dad became an asshole. He was violent and would beat me up, threaten me with violence and mentally abuse me all with the blessing of my dear old mum God kill her. Let's not forget that I was apparently the reason for the break up because I "wasn't obedient enough". Hey, at least after going through a lot of shit I've managed to avoid contact with those psychotic crazed persons and managed to keep a healthy relationship with my dad. He pulled me out of a lot of shit back in the day and for the entirety of my childhood and adolescence he was the pillar I hung unto. If it wasn't for him I don't think I'd be here today.
Still, I don't consider all step parents bad. That's an impossible assumption to make. Not all step parents are "douches" just like not all parents are douches.

My Step Dad and Step Mum to be are both pretty cool. In fact I can talk to my step dad more easily than I can my dad, but I do not see him as a replacement father and my step mum to be is really nice, I'm actually going to be a bridesmaid at her and my dads wedding.

My parents weren't really ever married to each other. Just common law hillbilly bullshit. Any who, Step-dad is alright guy sometimes a lazy asshole but if you point it out he'll try and make a change. Step-mom lost her kids right off the back, mooched off my dad's parents and is absolute bi-poler and insane. Perfect for my dad, because he deserver to have that baggage with him for the rest of his miserable life. I feel bad that my half-brother gets caught in between it but what can do?

You asked about step-parents in general, not necessarily yours. In not saying all step-parents are good, but they certainly aren't all bad.interspark said:
That stereotype is especially prevalent for step-fathers. My stepdad, however, was/is a good guy who's really looked out for me over the years. Goes to show ya that while stereotypes are often grounded in reality to some extent, they're not always true.

Well neither of my parents have remarried but over the years they've had partners and only 1 of 6 has been evil (and by evil I mean I almost actually consider them evil).
I think it just depends on your parents' taste. If they prefer nice people you'll get a great step parent, if they prefer the 'bad boy/girl' types then you're in trouble.
