I was talking to two friends of mine both of whom love Modern Warfare 2. They asked me when I'm getting it and I responded "Sometime after Mass Effect 2." The looked at me like I had two heads when I said I want a good story in my games. I mean a story as in chain of events, not a fun story (or campaign as it's called more often now)mode which I have a hard time believing MW2 will provide. Now, I've never played MW2 and I don't know if the story is good or bad but I've heard nothing about it's story mode only it's multiplayer leading me to believe that it's not the best. All I have heard is that it's one giant plot twist (a la gamesradar.com)

So my question is do you wonderful Escapists like a good story or do you just want to run around shooting stuff. Personally I like the escapism possible in video games and nothing immerses you more than created your own character from start to finish in Fallout 3, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age fashion.

There are time i want story.
And there are times i just want to ride a dragon and rip people and various monsters apart.
It just depends on my mood.
But for the most part story wins with me.

I do care about the story very much, so much so that I can play a game with mediocre gameplay just for the story, see Longest Journey and Silent Hill 2.
My thoughts exactly.

Oh look, it's this thread again.

My response has not changed; good stories are nice but not necessary and should never be valued over game play. Even if a game has an amazing story, I'm not going to play it if it doesn't entertain me. But it's even better when a game has good gameplay and a good story (Dragon Age: Origins).

To be honest, I couldn't care less. As long as the gameplay is awesome, and it gives excuses for massive fights, I really don't mind.

That's not to say, that I don't like a game with a story in it, and my favourite games all have awesome stories.

Edit:

Well, I do like a story, but having good gameplay is more important.

But, choosing something like MW2 (decent gameplay, crappy story) over something like Mass Effect (not as good gameplay, great story) is a big no no.

Yeah, story is pretty important in games to me, as are likable characters and character development. Still though, at the end of the day, it's more about the fun.

Its nice, but then one of my favourite games (Crackdown) has little to no plot and is still great.

I enjoy both, but I'd rather have a good story over good gameplay.

Granted, an amazing game needs both.
