With this current generation of consoles would you say the sequels are significantly stronger then the previous game?

*edit*

I have found over my life that sequels are usually weaker. I find that some of the bigger titles that have sequels (ie. Assassins Creed Uncharted) greatly improve on there concept by improving game play and storyline.

I realize that not EVERY sequel on the PS3 XBOX 360 Wii is an improvement.

I should have added a 'sometimes' option for the poll.

No. Less thought gets put into sequels typically. Or that's what it seems like to me anyway.

That's a pretty generalizing question... But I suppose this gen is rather focusing on improving the old mechanics rather than actually changing anything at the core too much.

So technically I suppose it's a "yes", though I don't know how much I appreciate playing it too safe when it comes to sequels.

Left 4 Dead 2, even though I only played the demo... besides, I don't have played any previous title of an Series, (Fallout 3, Oblivion) and other titles (Banjo 3, Guitar Hero 3,4,5) weren't better in my opinion.

Varies with the developers really.

Insomniac and Naughty Dog are pretty good with sequels.
Megaman 9 was an awesome sequel too ^^

depends on the game really. Some sequels have been great (assassins creed 2), some have been good (left 4 dead 2) and some havnt been so great (MW2)[in terms of single player story anyway]

I think a few are and a few aren't.
Left 4 Dead 2 was a good sequel, as was Assassin's Creed 2.
The core fundamentals (Wakka wakka) of the previous installment, with everything that was 'bad' being fixed.
I can see Mass Effect 2 falling into that same category.

But Two Worlds 2 is coming out, and unless they reinvent the wheel, it'll be a terrible game to sequel a terrible game.

I cant really decide because there's been a mixed bag of good and disapointing sequels this year and general personal opinion decides what was good, the main point of order being Modern Warfare 2; a game which sold millions and made $500 million plus, but seems to get so much stick despite having nearly 2 million people play it each night on multiplayer.

Games like Uncharted 2 and Assasin's Creed 2 however show that a sequel can learn and majorly improve upon, whilst others like Left 4 Dead 2 and Ratchet and Clank: Crack in Time show that sequels just build upon an awesome game in the first place.

Off topic a little I think the Playstation 1 years had the strongest sequels;

with oddly enough Insomiac and Naughty Dog being best back then with Spyro and Crash Bandicoot. Strange that isn't it?

You seemed like you were speaking down to me a bit there ¬¬

You did point out the 2 games i was talking about though, ACiT and U2 were by those 2 developers.

Not sure i agree that they were better at it back then though. Crash Bandicoot got progressively better but Spyro went downhill a little bit. Not saying they were ever bad though ;)

KHII, though prettier, was less engaging because they made it just too easy for the player. Exploration became a joke and they held your hand for the battles.

For the most part, yeah.

A weird opposite example was The Godfather II. I liked the first game a lot, and I was so surprised at how... well, how much it downgraded. You've got all of these really good sequels like Left 4 Dead 2, Assassin's Creed II, Modern Warfare II, people just lining up to get these because, while the first game was good, the second was even better.

As for the Godfather II... you know, the first game was great. How do you screw that up? Is it cause of The Don's View, they had to make room for the strategy aspect of it?

Yes. Almost every high-profile sequel I've seen (assassin's creed 2, left 4 dead 2, mass effect 2, to a certain extent mewtwo) has been better than it's predecessor. I know I can't make that judgement on ME2, but screw you.

Probably because sequels are generally more of a refinement of mechanics, instead of being brand new like they were in the original.

OT: Virtually every sequel I can think of this gen. has bettered it's predecessor.

Sometimes. A few examples out of my personal gaming library:

God of War < God of War 2
ICO < Shadow of the Colossus (even though that is more of a prequel, but in any way: it's a successor)
Jak & Daxter < Jak II: Renegade
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time < Prince of Persia 2: The Warrior Within
Call of Duty < Call of Duty 2
Assassin's Creed < Assassin's Creed 2
Resistance: Fall of Man < Resistance 2
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune < Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Gears of War < Gears of War 2
Kingdom Hearts < Kingdom Hearts 2
Half-Life < Half-Life 2
Spyro The Dragon < Spyro 2: Gateway To Glimmer
Zone of the Enders < Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner
Killzone < Killzone 2
No One Lives Forever < No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In H.A.R.M.'s Way (to a certain degree)

... That's it for now.

Really? I found it a bit more challenging than KH1, but that's just me.

Though, nothing beats the possessed-by-Ansem Riku battle from KH1.
