So after playing Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Ultimate Sith Edition) again, I found something incredibly infuriating. When you are attacked, you go into a brief stun lock where you can't move or block for a fraction of a second. What this means basically is that if you get hit by an enemy. you can't do anything until they finish whoomping on your ass, which a real killer on the higher levels. I finally got around it by blocking all the time, waiting for them to attack (I'm refering to the Jedi Temple level in The Force Unleashed) and then smashing them.

So, any bad experiences with stun locks, anyone??

Ultimate Dick Move when it's happening, Fair Enough afterwards with hindsight.

Unless it's in a single player game. No one truly likes being stun locked, developers should know that and avoid it in their enemies.

Mostly I hate whenever you are knocked down by a laser or weak weapon, you slowly get up with the same animation that is always used and immediately get knocked down again. If he can clear a room with a sneeze, then why can't he get up a LITTLE bit faster?!?

Been playing some League of Legends with my friends for the past month. Stun locks are the key to victory.

Oh yeah, I hate that bit too. If you miss the save, then you can't get up quickly. Why can't you press a button that makes you get up faster or something? And while I'm complaining, why is it in games like God of War and Prototype, any enemy, regardless of power can break any one of your combos, despite the fact that you are an uber-masculine powerhouse?

Happens a fair amount in Oblivion too, especially when you're in the Wastes trying to shut down a gate. Chamfears do it all the time. It gets annoying, but it means you need to think and develop a strategy when fighting so that you don't get stun locked and can still hit them (I usually fight close in, in case you wondered). So yeah, it's annoying, but it's still a perfectly valid move.

They're so very useful in MMORPGS (where allowed). Especially ones where you can base combos around them. I made a wizard that wouldn't get hit because of stun skills and a high evade rate. Thank god, because I had no HP because of it...

Multiplayer: Useful and valid, as long as it's not based around spamming a single skill until something dies.

Single Player: Annoying, but I think it's there to actually have the player strategize instead of soak up damage. Think of it as a penalty for not dodging the attack.

Generally speaking, they are perfectly acceptable and in fact many games rely heavily on the stun lock mechanic (or something similar) to function - e.g. every fighting game ever made.

What I really hate about stun locks is that on higher difficulties, if you get hit and stun locked, you're basically stuck there until the enemy finishes handing your ass to you, which is a death sentance an the highest difficulty. What, so I'm more powerful and he can break my combos, but I can't break his? That's severly messed up.

I freaking hate all moves that make you loose control of your character. Especially stun locks and a certain baseball bat.

I remember seeing videos of Vanilla WoW's rogue class, back then your stun duration didnt diminish the more you used it so basically the rogue would stun you dealing damage, then incapacitate you for 20 seconds, then he's able to do it all over again.

I actually hate the whole concept of stun locks no matter what type of game it is.

Not being able to fight back or do anything at all as player just takes away all the fun and seems like poor game design.

Having said that I too will take full advantage of stun mechanics in games I play, otherwise you're just gimping yourself.

Depends, a lot of online shooters do this to an extent, slowing you down and throwing your aim when you get hit. Here I think it's a good idea as it place the attacker at an advantage and help avoid stalemates.

In single player games it's crap, there's nothing worse than getting hit once and dieing because you can no longer maneuvre around your attacker.

It's cool. You just deal. There are far worse things in games that lead to cheap deaths...Like bad camera angles in platformers...

I hate the combo-breakers. Now, if you do a combo and an enemy hits you so it ends, that fine. I'd prefer if only strong attacks could stop your combo instead of tiny little pokes, but it's ok. The problem is when you are pouncing an enemy with your combo when suddenly HE blocks it mid-combo and hits you. And of course it's impossible for you to do the same, because you are stun locked when he does his combo.

Stun lock should at least apply to all enemies, not just you.

I never really had that problem in any games.

Except CoD 4, 5, and 6(MW2)

WHY DOES A FLASH GRENADE HINDER MY MOVEMENT?! IF ANYTHING I'D GO FASTER BECAUSE I JUST GOT HIT BY A FLASH GRENADE.

Stuns fine, because thats what its supposed to do.

Fair when I use it (knockdowns in DnD on my Monk, for instance) or when someone from my team does (Persona on the PS2).

Hate them when used against me. In any game.

Or too many projectiles/explosives from enemies. WHO CAN'T KILL THEMSELVES WITH THEM.

cough Hammerfight cough. Way to make an awesome concept a lot crappier.

"Hey, I'll make an awesome game where you move a small ship with your mouse and try to destroy another ship using a giant hammer, sword or an axe!!"

10 levels of Arena later.

"Oh, yeah, so now not only you fight 2 vs 1, but enemies carry better rifles than you do in a game about HAMMERFIGHTS, and carry one or two siege bombs each!! AND SHIELDS CAN'T PROTECT YOU! Oh, oh, and they can't kill themselves by using explosives!!"

Clap, clap.

Well.. Ive only ever had it on WoW, AoC and WAR but on all 3 its fair. Its those classes only defense to be honest.
A rogue on WoW doesnt have much else to survive except stuns
Priest arch-types on AoC have to use it to get off a heal
WAR is so team based that it barely makes a difference.
