knowing quite a few people who refuse to watch movies on the basis of their being subtitled (i.e. foreign language) im wondering why, since (and im aware this is just my own opinion) there are so many awesome foreign language films out there. the genius of Guillermo del Toro aside, i recently watched Dod Snow (Dead Snow) a Norwegian (i think) zombie horror comedy that beats the snot out of say Zombieland (which i quite enjoyed).

So, any thoughts, and perhaps your own opinions?

I don't really like subtitles because I believe voice is a large part of a character, and it's sort of annoying to have to read what they're saying as opposed to actually hearing it.

Maybe because people are lazy and don't want to read?

I'll watch a subtitled film, and play games with subtitles on by default. It negates the sandpaper voices (but then causes me to read quicker than they talk)

For any anime (movie or otherwise): Subs or GTFO
Only other type of movie I watched with subtitles: Pan's Labyrinth. It was amazing

If it's another language, then why wouldn't I watch it subbed? I read fairly quickly anyway, so I'm not one of those people who complain that you can't see what's going on. It's not that hard to keep the rest of the movie decently in peripheral vision and still read, is it?

If I'm going to watch a film not in English I much prefer subtitles to dubbing (even in animation), just because it looks better, and I don't mind reading them.

I kindly direct you to Baccano!, Cowboy Bebop, Genshiken, FLCL and any Miyazaki movie. Dubs are infinitely superior to subs in all of em.

I said yea myself. As a fan of anime I'm quite content with subs. I'll cite Pan's Labyrinth as well since it was amazing.

I vote yea. Inglourious Basterds wouldn't have been nearly as good if everybody only spoke English. Also, I can't stand any badly dubbed anime (except Black Lagoon).

Simply put, I must politely disagree. The original audio is the purest form of the anime that can be seen. I simply prefer it.

The emotions in the voice don't do that for you?

I personally love listening to foreign language, subbed or not. Mainly Spanish and German.

No, they don't. Spanish I'll accept since I can understand it decently well, but I don't care much for movies in other languages with subtitles.

I hate to say it, but I think the Otakus have it right on this one. Subtitles all the way. Languages have different tempos, and editors have to hack dialogue up so much to dub it in that most of the time the meaning changes completely. Subtitles will keep the original tone of the story.

I can't say I love reading my films (if I want to read, I do enjoy a good book), but a lot of movies I like turn out subtitled: The aforementioned Dead Snow and Pan's Labrynth; Der Untergang, and Inglourious Basterds off the top of my head.
High fives. I found Downfall to be an excellent movie. Stalingrad was good too - I guess nobody knows the era better than the Germans.
