Smash never seemed to me like a game in which you could button mash without getting yourself killed. Without lifebars (unless you're playing in stamina mode), button mashing is more likely to do a negligible amount of damage to your opponent and put you in a poor defensive position than it is to help you win.

Now, spamming (finding one move that can be done easily, such as Falco's Blaster or Meta-Knight's Tornado, and using it exclusively, usually running away to use it from a safe position), that's a whole 'nother bucket of fish. I'll just say Smash is a very spam friendly game and leave it at that.

Brawl is not a game to be measured in skill. it's just a game in which you are supposed to have mindless fun.

To sooner people realize this to sooner they can start to enjoy the game.
That could really be applied to any game that people play competitively.

Brawl button mashable, no not really, considering its basically ripped apart the basis of one on one combat, and freed your movements to not associate in a target locked manner (plays like a platformer), button mashing then becomes completely unviable.

Brawl Cheap Combo mashable, yes, yes it can be, quite easily, but you generally have counter stratergies for such instantces, much like button mashing in general fighting games.

I agree. I tried button-mashing in Brawl and I just kept falling off the edge. >_<

Button mashing will not only get you no where but will most likely kill you in Smash Bros. I button mashed some of my friends in Tekken to death and they were alot better than me. Then another guy came out of nowhere and kicked my ass so button mashing won't mean shit to an expert!

I agree that Brawl is not a serious game but Melee can be.

The way Smash plays is fundamentally different from traditional fighting games. If anything, I think there is more strategy involved in the Smash games than, say, Tekken or the like. There's too much distance that can be put between you and your opponent for actual button smashing to be a viable option. Add to that the myriad of items to use and the very platformy style of play and you get something that plays more like a sidescroller than a fighting game.

SSB does require a lot more skill than the average button smasher, I hate fighting games were your opponent begins to kick you repeatedly on the floor preventing you from getting up.
What makes button mashing/smashing a problem is when you have to be close to the other person.
like Sevre90210 says about "opponent begins to kick you repeatedly on the floor preventing you from getting up",can't happen if there is enough distance to keep you away from them and a way to get away from them if you do get cough by them.
In the SSB games you can get as far as you want from the person and still be able to hurt him while he is standing in one place rapidly massing/smashing buttons, in standard side scrolling fighters you can only hope to block or dodge the attack because you can only be a couple of inches away from your opponent at all times.
If he or she does this SUPER-MEGA-UNBLOCKABLE move on you your doomed because your charictor is close by Vs in SSB where you could be on the other side of the map and have enough time to get up before he gets to you.

I had to read your post twice in order to figure out how to vote.

Button mashing is useless in SSBB, it's also useless in tekken. Haven't played other fighters so i wouldn't know about them.

I think these two videos prove that it's not all about Button Mashing.

I think Super Smash Bros. is a cool dude he kills aliens and doesn't afraid of anything.

I do agree that SSB requires a bit more skill than most fighting games I've played. If you just button mash, you'll probably end up spazzing out somewhere.
Yes

You can win in SSB with button mashing easy IF you also spam items, and since A is both pick up and part of a smash attack they tend to go hand in hand.

I remeber my mum wanting to play a fighting game with me, so I told her the buttons, and we played. Due to some random combination of buttons being pressed, she pulled of an unblockable combo that damn near killed me, then kicked me a couple of times and won. Thats the one time I've seen button mashing get anyone anywhere, and Brawl is definately a game where you couldn't do it.

Button mashing is impossible in any of the Smash Bros. games. The reason for this is that whilst other fighting games are about getting someone's health to zero, SSB games are all about getting your opponent of the edge of the arena, which requires more skill and strategy, as you need to do things likemake sure they don't jump back up, which is very hard to do by buttonsmashing.
