About a month back I turned 18 (the legal drinking age in Australia) now ever since then I have been buying alcohol and sometimes cigarettes to my younger friends (15-17). I have no remorse when doing this and I went as far as buying a mate a 6 pack for his 16th birthday and presenting it to him in front of his parents (though they don't mind and see me as their "fourth son").

So I was talking to my friend last week, who is also 18, when her sister came up to her and asked is she would buy her alcohol. My friend quickly declined the request as well as making it apparent that I would not be either when her sister turned to me. When her sister left I inquired as to why she didn't just get it for her when she herself had engaged in underage drinking and had no problem with alcohol. She replied with that she felt that her 16 year old sister was to young to drink and also that by buying she was being a bad influence and that would be being a bad big sister. She said the laws are there for a reason and then inquired as to why I have no problem with getting my 15 year old friends drunk.
Well I had to think about this for a second I said that it made me feel good to receive the praise from them and that I enjoyed helping out my friends. It is also that I never had anyone who could/would do it for me on a regular basis until I was well into being 17 and that I didn't like that I had missed out and didn't want them to either. I also used the copout excuse that if they didn't get it from me they'd get it somewhere else, which even though this is true, is a copout and irrelevant.

Before anyone goes yelling at me about being irresponsible I will point out that with the exception of 2 occasions I have actually been there drinking it with them (as well as other 18 years olds) and that in the case of 2 brothers (one 17, other 16) that their parents don't mind at all and I often go round there and have a few drinks with the whole family.

So what I want to know is, what is your view on supplying these underaged kids with alcohol? Do you do it yourself? Or are you totally against it?

Yeah, no. Never. I won't ever drink or smoke, and I'll be darned if I'm gonna get busted or giving people younger than me the privilege.

Remember kids:

The moment you have your 18th birthday, you are READY to consume alcohol. The day before then you can't handle it.

And it's the same for everybody.

first off, if you are underaged and drinking you are breaking the law
second, if you supply minors with alchohol knowingly you are breaking the law.

and no i wouldn't drink even if i weren't underaged.

Well I can't buy alcohol yet, I'm 19 and live in the US so I've got two more years on that, but I will never buy tobacco for underage people. I'll bum friends cigarettes from time to time, but that's it.

I went home last weekend and went into the Milk Mart (local convenience store) and these two sketchy high school sophomores or freshmen stopped me and my buddy and asked us if we'd buy them two mini dutches. I told them fuck no, because A. I don't know them and B. I know exactly what they're using those for and they're way too young to be smoking weed.

Well...I am underage but even if I wasn't, I wouldn't. I don't want to deal with the possible legal penalties and everyone should just wait their due time. :p

I am underage, and I have never asked anyone to buy alcohol or anything for me. I have at least two friends who do that though, and I just have to sigh at their decisions. Even if you have a good reason, I find that doing something like asking another to buy stuff like this for you is just wrong. Sometimes, these laws are in effect for a reason.

Thats exactly how it is hey. Doesn't really make much sense. As for everyone referring to legal repercussions that's something that never even crosses my mind even when I see all those signs, because in the 9 months of my friend supplying me (and the years he did of other people before) he has never been in any trouble and I've never met a person who actually has been fined for supplying an underaged with alcohol.

I live in Australia and I've been asked to supply alcohol to underage people many times, often by complete strangers. I always say no, the penalties for doing so are pretty nasty and besides if they want alcohol it's none of my business. Besides I don't drink and I don't like buying alcohol period, it's a pain in the butt because I have to stand in queues with ugly sweaty gross alcoholics.

Yeah I don't do it for strangers, all the people I buy it for are good friends of mine and often end up drinking half of what I buy with them.

Nope. I use to buy alcohol for my friends when we were all under-age, but since I turned 21 (legal age in America) I had already given up alcohol and with my history of alcohol haven't felt like helping anyone else experience what I went through.

Since I was 19, on average I drink once every three or so years when I either really need to loosen up (like in a group of friends I don't really know) or need help sleeping (like when my ex ran off with her son whom I considered my own.) Otherwise I just have too much going on in my life to waste time drinking intoxicants.

Fuck that.

I'm 17 and already I've built up a tolerance to Jack Daniels and Bicardi 151.

Eh, tolerance is a sad sad thing.

Being able to get pissed extremely quickly while being naturally immune to all but the worst of hangovers (instead still merely being drunk the next morning)? That's the way to be ;)

(Only hangover I remember getting was after half a bottle of brandy. I still came out of it better than the guy who had the other half - I was just very bad-feeling until like 1200, he was gone until ~1600)

I think the real question is why do you have 15 year old friends?
I buy stuff for my underage friends but they are all at 17 (me being 18), we're in the same year at school and going to deal with stuff at the same time so I dont see being born 6 months after me as a problem. I probably wouldnt buy anything for 15-16 year old people but that is mostly because they suck.

No. I don't feel like breaking any laws like that.

Then again, I don't see the point of alchohol at all, so I may be a bit biased on this. (Disclaimer: not trying to start a pros and cons of alchohol thing here, just stating it to get the point across that maybe my opinion on the matter shouldn't weigh in as much)

I also don't buy cigs for anyone. At least five times at my local convenience store I've had kids outside ask me to buy them some smokes. All I do is piss them off by asking if they're 18, and saying "then no" when they say no. I don't feel like contributing to cancer.

If kids want to smoke and/or drink underage, they can find their own liquor/cigarette stores that have no care or consideration for their licenses, like I did. I ain't supplyin' shit to underage kiddies.

Haha fair call but we play for the same football club and one of them is a mates brother, and I'm always at his house. I go to the same school as my mates brother and these kids that I play football with, but not my mate, I see them as younger brothers really and I always stop and have a chat to them when I pass them at school.

I will never buy anything for an underaged kid, but if they can get it on their own, more power to 'em.

I went into stores and bought my own cigarettes without a fake ID, I can count on one hand how many times I got drunk before I turned 21, and illegal substances are illegal no matter who has them, so that really doesn't count. I have no issue saying no to young and dumb kids. Before I figured out how to do it, I was turned down plenty too.
