Nope, you're not in a firefight here :p. This thread is about song covers. Now, I'm going to ask you guys to do a bit of a challenge. Listen to all three versions of the following song, or recall them if you've heard them before, and then answer in the poll (and the thread) which one you think is the best version. Then, answer the question at the bottom of the post, in the main thread. Note, this thread was inspired by my listening to this song repeatedly just now, because it's just that awesome.

Okay, so plenty of us enjoy music, and plenty of songs have been covered by other artists. So, my question to you now is, what cover versions of songs would you say are better than the original? What covers ruined the song? What are your thoughts as a whole? Share your opinions here, and even post some cool cover songs here too if you want :p.

To get the ball rolling just that bit more, I really hate one particular cover. Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse. When they covered The Zutons' song 'Valerie', they did such a piss-poor job, yet the cover is the one every radio station plays and everyone knows, while a pretty cool band like The Zutons remains somewhat unknown. Does that seem fair to you? Not to me, it doesn't. But for good covers? Look no further than BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge. Now those are some covers worth listening to...

Kanye West wrote "Heartless", which got overplayed and became boring.

Then, out of nowhere... <youtube=LBTdJHkAr5A&ob>

Yeah, it's a direct cover, which makes Isaac Slade's crooning of Kanye's slang pretty funny, but it's still ten times better than the original.

What covers are worse than the original songs? Nothing [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ffuCVLECpY] I [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FfzPQwt-Us] know [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXmAA712tac] of [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQkBzoCKF0U].
I liked the cover of Empire State of Mind. Really.

Covers that are better...
I will always love you - Whitney Houston
All Along the Watchtower - Hendrix
Hush - Deep Purple

Covers I like about the same as the original...
Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm
Rubberband Man - Electric Six

Sometimes covers aren't a bad thing. I refer you to Whitney Houston as my first reference.

In the Distrubed video, was that a Rhino APC from 40k? It was at about 0:24. Did anyone else notice that? Or am I just seeing things?

I believe that was the end of WW2 light German tank that the Rhino APC was based of.

OT: I like the covers that change something about the original song, like transform it from country song to a rock ballad, for example. As for Disturbed's cover of "LoC" I didn't like it much EXACTLY because it sounded the same as the original only with different vocalist and newer instruments.

EDIT: As for my own contribution to the topic...
THIS is the kind of cover I approve of.

Drat.. I actually was wanting this to be a discussion on cover mechanics.

As for cover tunes... Given that the 80s was basically a cultural wasteland, in most cases songs from the 80s that have been covered my more modern bands typically result in a song that is more esthetically pleasing than the original in my personal estimation. With a few exceptions usually where the original song was beyond help. such as Alien Ant farms cover of smooth criminal or Reel Big Fish's cover of Ah Has Take on me.

Also Metallicas cover of Bob Segars Turn the page was also a good example of a vastly inferior cover and would be applicable if it werent for the fact the original stems from the 70s.

I like the Gary Jules cover a lot more than the original Tears for Fears version of Mad World.

Hell Yeah! Even my mom likes the cover better than the original. But she actually likes a lot of the Disturbed songs she has heard. Yeah, this still shocks me.

Anyway, to contribute to the thread:
Really it's a matter of opinion. I really like this song, and I think it's better than the original. Your results may vary.

Poll wise: I liked the first cover.

For good covers, check out Smashing Pumpkin's cover of Fleetwood Mac's Landslide
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4U4opbXoMss

-> the Dixie Chick's version is pretty good too if you like country instead of rock
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4_wXPZ1Bnk&ob=av2n

or Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nail's Hurt
