Have you ever taken time off work to play a game. Say its a new release and you want to get in on it as soon as you can.

Do you think its right or wrong to take annualt leave/sickdays off to play a game?

I got thinking about this cause the release of cataclysm soon and heard people planning to be sick.

So people are comparing it to taking time off to watch a sport game like the football.

I think that its your time that you can take for what ever reason you want so there isnt an issue.

I find it wrong on numerous levels. A job means money, a videogame means wasted time.

There is no game so important it cannot wait until the weekend.

really that logic can be applied to anything, meaning that unless you spend your whole life working you are wasting time and should kill yourself since enjoyment is for children and the only function of an adult is to work themselfs to death so that the company can harvest their organs and collect on the insurance policies they have on them

Don't take sick leave you might need that someday. Also is it PAID annual leave? If so take that (and skip seeing your family for Christmas) :)

You're aware this is a website devoted to gaming, right?

Sorry if that came off as rude, I just... yeah...

I have called in sick to play games before (in all fairness I had 2 months of sick time built up), but my manager takes the cake. He has scheduled 2 weeks vacation time because World of Warcraft Cataclysm is coming out. On the upside my sales will go up without him there to snipe my clients.

Eh, anymore I really only consider it a pastime like watching television. It is entertainment, and thus largely frivolous.

It's pretty much the same as taking a day off to watch sports, but that's also not OK to do.

It's a bit silly to compare taking a day off for a game with taking it off to watch sport. A match is only gonna happen once, the game will always be there. I don't see why you'd need to take a day off to play it.

I say skip it. But then again, I'm one of those odd individuals who actually values their life over their job. But for all those uptight money-rolling grown-up folk, I'd suggest they don't take time off work to play a game, lest they miss their annual bonus.

oops, this sums up my opinion better.

Well if it is something you really enjoy, then I see no problem with it. I took the day off for Black Ops because I knew I wouldn't be home from the midnight launch till late and that I would be tired the next day. It's no different to taking a sick day for anything else.

Plus I wouldn't be Australian if I didn't support chuckin' a sickie every now and then!

I voted that it's just plain wrong to take a day off to play a game. On the other hand, if you're already out there's no reason not to play a videogame, assuming you also have the time to do whatever it is you actually took off for. Generally speaking, if you're taking a sick day, you shouldn't feel well enough to play a videogame, but I guess there's cases where you're either too contagious to go in but not feeling too bad to play, or simply recovering from surgery which temporarily makes it impossible to do your job, but not impossible to game. x0ny has it right, though -- if it's possible, play on your lunch break. I've heard pretty cool stories in the past about people throwing together small LAN parties on their lunch break. Considering that I'm going to be a highschool teacher, I might legitimately be able to do that at my future job, which would be pretty cool. Sponsoring a gaming club might be even cooler...

I take it annual leave is vacation time? If so, I don't see anything wrong with taking that to play a game. What you do with your vacation is your own business. If you want to use it to watch paint dry, be my guest.

But taking sick days is a little over the top... I don't think you should be taking sick days if you aren't actually sick. Sure, you get 3-or-however-many a year, and some people abuse it. But that doesn't give you an excuse to abuse the system, too.

Depends. If it's an easily replaced student job and you don't make a habit of it, maybe you could take a day off to unwind. If it's your career, fuck no.

That's only true if you think money is the only important thing in the world. What good is money if you can't spend it on the things you enjoy? What if I happen to enjoy my freetime spent playing video games? Why is being willing to give up some money for a hobby I enjoy wrong?

The match can be recorded, and all of the best highlights can most likely be found on youtube. In this great age of technology, your logic fails.
Watching a recording isn't the same as watching it live.

I'm a bit "meh" about the situation, but I've never done it myself, and never will. I mean, the game's still gonna be there when I finish work... :S
