I like the idea of getting a tattoo and a few of my mates have them but if I were to get one I'd rather it was something that meant something to me rather than just a random picture.

Check it out
I got it after I finished my chemo, as a reminder to myself of what I am capable of.

If I were to get one, I would do the same, otherwise, what's the point of having it?

]I love tattoos.

I've got five myself, going for a few more pretty soon.
The next one I want to get (if I can ever find a decent enough image) is a phoenix. Probably be the most meaningful tattoo I get really, and honestly if anyone knows where to find attractive images of a phoenix and could point me in that direction it'd be heroic.
With phoenix tattoos, the artist you go to (if he is good) will generally have a great idea and be able to sketch you up one no problem. That might be a better idea than googling phoenix images, because it makes it more unique and a piece of original art.

I would definitely like to have a tattoo. Overdoing it is a major problem though. Maybe just a few tasteful ones where people can see, but a full back or sleeve would be excessive

Ive seen some pretty cool ones on the internet, if that counts...

<spoiler= Awesome one showing muscle tissue>

That's intense... Looks insane.
I'm not a big Spiderman fan but it could work for other superheros.
The muscle one is fucking awesome.

ummm, they don't really hurt... that's just a rumour started to stop pussies getting tatts...
not necessarily. i usually have a very high pain threshold, but the one i got on my inner left wrist hurt so much i nearly passed out afterwards.

They're quite cool depending on what type you get, I'm getting a tribal one down my arm just before the Escapist UK =D well hopefully .

I dig your ink, man! The little zombie's great. I was against tattoos for awhile, but then went through a bit of a rough patch and ended up getting the Snowtown tag from "Fell" on my foot. Dug it, went back and got a bunch more work done. Now my pride and joy is my "Jolly Roger Chef". On the back of my right calf I have a skull wearing a chef's toque and holding two crossed knives in its mouth. The cool part is that the knives are my two main knives I use in my kitchen, one with the tip broken off and worn down from sharpening. I'll try to get a picture put up.

i cut my hand pretty bad on my mum's car's exhaust pipe about four years ago, ever since then i've had a black line going across my palm where the black shit from the rim of the pipe died the flesh beneath my skin black. that's basically what tatoos are; dying your flesh. does it really seem like a good idea?

I decided long ago that I was gonna get a tattoo, but not until i turn 25 (due to the fact the the body doesn't really stop growing until then so if you get one before that it is likely to reduce in quality over the coming years) and it's going to be one big tattoo. Most likely a back one. I have no problem with covering most of your body with tattoos but unless they're of the same theme/coloring than I just think it looks weird.

I don't mind tattoos but I don't see a point. It's like "body modification" without actually doing anything useful.

Plus, it's a bit too permanent for me (and yes, I know that you "can" remove them, but it's too much of a trouble)... I probably wouldn't get one, but I don't really care. I wouldn't want to be stuck with a tattoo I wouldn't like some odd 20-30 years later (or especially if I either get more buff/more fat, it'd get so distorted).

Meh. We'll see how it goes.
It's the meaning behind the image. Tattoo's are symbols, and what makes them special is that they're a part of you. The permanence is what makes them special.

it's kind of stupid to get a tattoo.
you might think they're awesome now, but 10~20 years from now you will look at it and hate yourself for taking tattoos.

oh, and btw, your tattoos (tattoos of the OP) look like crap.

Tattoos are pretty cool. I just feel kind of sorry for the people who put a stripper on their arm. How will they explain that at parties when they're sixty-seven?
Or the people that tattoo every inch of their skin. It looks awesome, but there are obvious drawbacks. Not only must that hurt like all freaking hell, but if you don't want a checkerboard all over your face anymore, what then?
Eventually I might like to get some sort of funky awesome design from my knuckles about halfway up my forearm. Not something big though. I'd get something that wouldn't be glaringly obvious at first glance and wouldn't be embarrassing in forty years.
(Incidentally, my sophomore Social Studies teacher had tattooed her arms completely, and kept it a secret between her and her students because the administrators would most likely fire her if they knew she had skeletons and roses all up and down her arms. Which is kind of awesome in my opinion.)

And that's why so many people choose generic premade images which were around for centuries?

You know, the same heart/skull/celtic bullshit. Or, even worse, someone's name. I've known a girl who had her boyfriend's name tattood on her leg... And she has broke up with him a few years ago.

If it's something original, then sure, it's a symbol.
EDIT: agree with you 100% on the names thing. Only parents and maybe kids need apply.

But when I see people sporting the same, awful, unoriginal tattoos... Urgh.
I was talking to an artist not too long ago about tattoo meanings and how you'll reflect on them and he made a good point.
I say if you get a piece because you like that is meaning enough and it will always represent a time in your life when you were into a certain genre of art and design. Stop oooing and aahhhing over all the sob stories behind these only average tattoos being giving by artists on national TV that are only money hungry and don't give a crap about the art form. The stories are only there to get viewers and these people with these hoe-dunk reasons for getting a tattoo are simply fad frenzied maniacs looking for an excuse to get a tattoo so they can reason with themselves.

If you like a piece of art but not too sure where it would fit in your home; simple, get a tattoo of it.
Which i sort of agree with. I mean, I personally would never get something off a parlor wall put into my skin, but that doesn't mean people don't enjoy them. (Even if i secretly pity them from the sidelines)
P.S. I know how rich this must sound coming from someone with a basic, at best, tribal design. But it's mine. I made it.
