Let me clarify that. Mind reading is a gross, depraved practice, regardless of the circumstances behind its use. It's my believe that a person's thoughts are their inner-most sanctum, the most private place anyone has, and a breaching that boundary is a violation of mind in the same way rape is a violation of body. I've heard quite a lot of opinions on this before, both with me and against. So does this make sense to you, or am I crazy?

EDIT: I mean, obviously, as a hypothetical concept. I don't think mind-reading is real
Lol What do you have to hide. If I have mind reading powers I will abuse it without consequence.

Reading of mind without being let to is definetly a criminal offense. Besides rape, you could also compare it to burglary.

Would be pretty fun to try and sic contents of my mind on someone trying to read it, though.

Your mind is the only thing that is private to you. I mean TRULY private. If someone were able to read my mind nothing I do would ever be private, hell, just thinking about the concept of mind-reading/mind-control for a long time can make a person go mental.

I'm under the opinion that things that are adequately distanced from reality should not be judged because doing so is sort of going out of the way to delude one's self.

I suppose the real question here is whether or not one's thoughts are sacred. I'm inclined to believe that someone who places great importance in their mental privacy probably has the most the hide. That being the case, perhaps telepathy would be the opposite of evil in that it brings these injustices to light for resolution.

Quite trite to be so afraid of embarrassment over something as rudimentary as being human.

Not many actions are inherently evil or good, in a sense. Motivation is more important when deciding moral alignment of an act.

If someone read your mind for the purpose of learning your bank account numbers, that would be evil. If they read your mind to find out what color you would like your brand new motorbike to be, that's not so evil.

Though, there is the concept of a Right to Mind. A person's privacy is a right, so thoughts, being the most private part of a person, are rights as well. But it's rather vague, considering that mind reading isn't real.

If it was real, no, rape is where you force yourself onto someone, and fuck them (or something like that) and they KNOW you're doing it and don't want you to

It's evil even though it does not exist.

Just like if Michael Atkinson had a soul, it would be evil along with the rest of him.

How about projecting thoughts? Like communicating without words. I can only imagine that would be the purest form of communication.

I don't think it's all that evil. But I see how it is morally objectionable.

Mind reading without consent could be consider sort of a "mind-rape" but it's rather gray on a moral level. I mean forcably rooting through someones mind would be quite a no-no, but just skimming off the foremost thoughts of somebody I wouldn't consider too bad. Also why you're doing it in the first place has a big part in whether you can consider the act "evil". Finding the location of an armed bomb by thought-reading a terrorist could be considered justified, while just looking through someones memories for the kicks probably isn't the nicest thing you can do.

As for if it's consensual then by all means it's totally fine. Then telepathy is just a very intimate form of conversation.

Only if mis-used...

I'm sorry. I'm a HUGE fan of psychic power. Who needs super strength, when you can levitate shit and read minds?

For everyone who thinks its mind reading, I think he/she means psychology. Knowing how a person acts and figuring out why he or she does what they do. Yeah it's kind of like mind reading, but it takes a while for things to connect and make sense, and they aren't always right.

Ok for the literal term of telepathy, yeah it is kind of raping the mind. But telepathy is not real, Some people are extremely good at figuring out who people are by looking at what they look like, how they sound, the way they act. Their brains think in a way that gives them the ability to put certain pieces together. (those pieces being mental and physical aspects of the person they are figuring out.) It's just how they think. Like how we problem solve in our heads; their way of figuring things out is different to ours, Everyone is in some way.

What depraved thoughts are you hiding in there that you felt the need to post something like this on the Escapist? Are you compensating for something?

I wouldn't say that it's evil in it's nature. It's the difference between a serial killer, and a police officer who has been forced to kill during his career. It's all about the use.

I have masturbated to the most terrible things! I don't want people to see that!
But in all seriousness, the "if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear" argument is one that holds no weight with me. It's the same argument homeland security used to defend the patriot act and wire tapping. But I really don't want to get into that subject. It's a one-way street to thread derailment.
