Now adays I just pick random. I don't particulary care which race I am. (Though I've noticed it tends to make me zerg alot)
Each have there goods and bads, you just need to adjust your tactics for the race.

I voted Protoss based on that in SC1 they are the most forgiving race for a relative noob. Less units to control, and the units can take a hit or two. With Zerg, you have more units to build and manage. Terran commits to their attacks and when they fail, they often don't get to pull back. Both have troops weak enough that not controlling them for a split second can end up in disaster.

heh, funny, I just played some StarCraft yesterday. Anyway, I generally favor the Terrans. I like to attack with a group of Marines + Medics, and I like how the Terrans can repair any building or structure back to full health. Oh, and the Science Vessel is funky.
But of course I play the other two races too, StarCraft is very well balanced.

If it's like the first Starcraft, the game will be balanced so the Zerg are the early game dominators, the Terran the medium game dominators, and the Protoss the guys who win in a longer game.

But then, I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to tweak the balance so they'll all be equally powerful. Hey, it's 2009 now, time to bring the game to the 21st century.

My vote goes on "don't focus on one" if only because you're probably going to evolve a shifting taste as you go.

As for me, I'm not going to be in a hurry to get Starcraft 2. Back when Starcraft 1 was out, I always preferred Total Annihilation. I've already got my 21st century Total Annihilation with Supreme Commander.

Terran, to me, seems a bit harder to manage than the other two races. You need to heal your units with an SCV or Medic (as opposed to the Protoss/Zerg who regenerate shields/health automatically), your cloaking is temporary (Wraiths and Ghosts need energy to cloak while Zerg ground units can stay burrowed indefinitely and Protoss cloaked units never lose their cloaking).

Building is more convoluted than that of the Protoss/Zerg. To build, a Terran player needs to send an SCV to build something, and the SCV is occupied until the building is complete. Unless you're very good at multitasking, when you need to build several buildings at a time, you'll end up with several SCV's sitting around doing nothing for a while (assuming something else occupies you, such as an enemy attack).

When the Protoss build something, they send out a probe to build a rift. Once the rift is opened (takes less than a second), it'll make the building on its own and the Probe is free during this time, meaning a single Probe can effectively be used to quickly make a defensive matrix of turrets without the help of other Probes. When the Zerg build something, the Drone mutates into the building, meaning you lose a Drone, but you don't have to worry about having an idle Drone once the building is complete.

I think the Terrans are the best team when it comes to reconnaissance, however. The ComSat station can occasionally be used to reveal any area on the map, where as the other two races would need to send units to scout the area. Very difficult to do against a heavily defended base.

The Protoss are a close second, however, with their Observers (flying permanently cloaked units that can detect enemy cloaked units). Dark Templars are also excellent for guarding resource areas and preventing enemies from building there. One of my favourite strategies in Starcraft is to keep a close watch over all the resource points, and prevent the enemy from building there, leaving him screwed when the resources of his main base run out.

The Protoss always seemed to be the simplest to manage to me. Perma-cloaked units, automatic shield regeneration, single Probe building, and fewer (but stronger) units made it easier for beginners to manage them, especially seeing as how in Starcraft 1, you could only control 12 units at a time (something that will be thankfully fixed in Starcraft 2)

Zerg. Sending waves of units to their death is so fun.

This thread is pointless, none of us played the game. You'll decide once you finish single player campaigns.
I'm asking for everyone's opinion based on their experiences playing the original.
No race is simple. Each one takes the same amount of time to master and has many simple or difficult strategies. Maybe Terrans are a bit easier to start with, since you know how a "Tank" works while "Mutalisk" is not so obvious.
And I bet strategies in SC2 are going to be very different from SC1.
Trying to predict anything is as futile as guessing Warcraft 3 tactics from Warcraft 2.
He's not.. trying to predict anything o-o.... he's just asking which race people like to play with... Calm down...

I personally like the zerg and do not believe there to be an "easiest" to start off with as the game is wonderful enough to mold to each persons playing style ^_^.
