Ignoring whether or not the AI acts intelligently, it seems like enemies ussually fall into one of two AI patterns (particularly in stealth games or more freeform RPG). Territorial or Bloodthirsty.

Territorial is when you walk into a room, are noticed by the enemy who begins to shoot at you, and as soon as you leave he loses interest. No chase, no real devotion to killing you, you were just in their zone and they wanted you to leave.

Bloodthirsty is when you walk into a room, are noticed by the enemy who begins to shoot at you, and no matter how far away you run they follow trying to kill you (ala Oblivion). No real reason, no strategy to defeat you, you were just there and now you have to die.

Obviously, a mix of both is ideal but if you had to choose one, which is the better AI?

Bloodthristy if I have one choice. Like you said in games like Oblivion it just makes for really fuuny chases and sitiuations arising from it.

I tend to play cautiously, so bloodthirsty AI gets me nice and scared. If that's what's supposed to happen, it should be no other way.

Depends on game for me. Specifically, the plot.
It makes sense for a guard to be territorial and a hunter to be bloodthirsty.
Reverse it, and we've got guards abandoning their posts and hunters who don't hunt.

Depends on the genre. Shooters generally do well with territorial based AI. Melee games with bloodthirsty.
