First off, I love games with story. I think that a good story can make up for lots of shit gameplay, and that games should be focusing on that area. However in my opinion Tetris, a game with no story, is the greatest game of all time. Why? Because the core gameplay of it is absolutely perfect. Seriously, new versions and game modes are always inferior to the original gametype because it got it so fucking right. I can not find a single fault with it. Sure, perhaps the randomisation feature could be improved, but stacking and clearing tetronimoes is addictive and the core gameplay is something that will never age. I understand my opinion is by no means definitive and probably influenced by insomnia, but can you name one other game that has absolutely perfect core gameplay?

EDIT: Wow, I say core gameplay a lot

my god, if that game didnt devour countless hours of my life. i remember i got the gameboy version of tetris as a kid, and played it during a road trip.

2 days straight i played tetris. right until the batteries ran out. beat marathon mode, or whatever one eventually ends. i COMPLETELY zoned out reality for 2 days, i did not sleep, and only occasionally broke for food, not even for the rest stops. damn if i can find a game nowadays that can do that. have to vote yes.

I absolutely disagree with you. It's timeless, sure, but it's pretty fucking boring 20 years later.
How so?
Just my opinion and all but watching blocks and shit fall into place isn't exactly revolutionary anymore.
But you miss the complex Soviet metaphor, the blocks represent the workers, building towards communist regime that can never work.

Or it is just blocks falling into place.

Well, I think it's probably the most technically and mechanically perfect game ever. But then there's Pong too... but hell, I'll just vote 'Yes'.

The two parts of that statement seem to be contradictory...

Anyway, plain old Tetris is as simplified as you can get without going into simplistic territory, and as a result it's more or less as good as you can get without delving into another genre; in the "Tetris genre", there is nothing better than tetris, just things that are lesser and/or different.

I'm not sure that it's the best game ever, but it is probably as good as it can possibly be in that form.

Maybe. Or something.

I think it will be find with a brand new coat of paint, epic music, and an exciting cinematic whenever a layer is destroyed (as it explodes)

that should get people re-interested in it.

There's no magical fire blocks, no axe or sword blocks. There's no side quests to unlock other block shapes or explorable areas to drop blocks into. There's not even a single dragon block to slay. Plus the Line Block is totally overpowered, I mean potential to destroy four rows at once? No other block can do that. It's like they weren't even trying to balance it! Seems like a half finished game to me. =|

Tetris isn't the best game of all time, but it certainly isn't the worst.
And now this
