Does anyone else despise text based story. I just got Soulcalibur IV (I know I know...) and I was disappointed that the story was practicably only told through a three paragraph section of small scrolling text at the start. The only cut scenes were reused millions of times. It is 2009! Can't we move past text based talking. Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core also had this when characters talked. Am I the only one who hates it.

No I hate it too.
It's 2009, if you don't have access to wonderful voice acting then hire someone with some training to do the voice over. We're not deaf have someone speak.

I'd rather read words than hear awful voice acting.

Sure, they CAN get great voice acting, but that means a budget increase. =/

Ok, I see your point on this but the only time I want or should I say have to read a long story is in school not during vacation. All I'm saying :)

Text based stories can jump in a pit. Braid being a prime example: you're telling me that I can't even have someone read out the finale bits? What a letdown after all that effort.

I don't mind if the story is text-based or not. The voices would most likely not fit in with Soulcaliber 4.
Bad voice acting is bad.

I think it's ok if it's like in-game lore.
Just finished metroid prime: corruption, and i liked how the story was told through the game, but the lore of the worlds you visit is told through text (which you find and scan)

Are we talking about completely out of touch with the game text paragraphs laid to you between levels or such, or just dialogue boxes instead of voice overs?

Because they are pretty separate matters.

Anyway, your criticism on Crisis Core isn't very fair. No, they didn't need to put voices to all scenes despite this being 2009 and all. Because they couldn't. It's a UMD they need to fit their game into and with them already having plenty of spoken dialogue... No space.

Plus partially only text based isn't a bad solution at all. FFX for one suffered from lack of dialogue, especially if compared to previous ones. Voice acting is a bigger chore, takes more space and in FFX's case was mostly bad anyway.
What Crisis Core did was a good compromise. Use voice acting in key points of the game save space, time and resources with less relevant and filler dialogues.

That way you can still have the voice actors give the characters more of a personality but don't have to cut out any story material simply because you didn't have time to include it.

I never mind reading, unless the text in particular is hard to read or understand.

Walls of text for one example, and old text (J.R.R. Tolkien) for another. The reason I don't like old text is because the language tends to be much different, and I have a hard time following and absorbing what the hell is going on.

Not really. I play Fire Emblem and Trauma Center, two series with A LOT of talking and all text based.
