I notice that my boss does a lot of texting at work, and of course if anyone else pulls out their phones he comes down on them hard for it. Also it sets a poor example for the newer people we have working.

I wont lie I have sent the odd text message at work so I am guilty as well.

I don't text, that would be betraying my bosses trust that I will keep the store as my first priority with my attention.

Besides I'm already watching house, why would I need to text?

Hypocrisy at it's best people!

At college, depending on the teacher being a douche will I consider texting. Unless he isn't a douche then he gets my respect of not texting in his lesson.

Nope. I do surf the Internet, but I don't do anything that would cause my phone to make noises and distract people.

I haven't had anyone to text so I cut my messaging, used to do it a lot but I felt I could since I did most of the work anyway.

I don't own a cell phone, it's physically impossible for me to text at work.

I tweet about stuff from time to time, but I have a cleaning job so if no one notices, it's not a big deal.

No, I don't text in school and I probably won't at whatever job I get stuck with in the future. That's stupid and it's a good way to have your boss/teacher/whoever take your phone away.

I'd suggest going to the person above him and talking to them about it. It's bad for the workplace and hypocritical of him.

I generally don't like texting because it hurts the hell out of my hands. But I think that there are reasonable times to do it. I've had very few jobs that required me working every minute/second that I was there. Hell even as a cashier I've had times where I'm just standing there doing damn near nothing. Those times I think it is fine if you pull out a phone and text. But too many people do it at inappropriate times. I remember once I was paying for food in my school's cafeteria and the lady at the register suddenly got a text and she said "I'll be right back" and walked off in the middle of ringing up my stuff. I was like wtf? I waited like 3 or so mins and just walked away. I later felt bad about wasting the food but I shouldn't have had to stand there like an idiot holding a tray of stuff.
I've vary rarely had a huge problem with a boss or a teacher texting/getting calls and not allowing their employees or students do it. Most teacher's I've had were like if you need to make a call or anything along those lines just quietly leave the class room like you have to go to the bathroom and make the call or text and come back.

I'm allowed to text at work, since I'm a manager, so I do often, but not where customers can see it. While regular employees are banned from even having their phone on them, I only care when they have it out somewhere a customer could see it. We tried letting them use their phones for work issues, like finding one of us to fix a problem, but they never did, so we just went back to the ban. We managers use our phones regularly to communicate work information, so that's why our General Manager lets us keep them on us.

It's a hypocrisy issue in some situations, but for us it's the best solution. We did try letting them have phones on them, and they just abused the privilege.

I text in school. I don't do it obvious enough to get caught, however, and my phone doubles as an iPod so if we're allowed to listen to music I just say I'm selecting a new song or something.
That, except that my phone is a phone and an MP3 player, not an iPod :)
And I send LOTS of texts, and I've got Duke Nukem's "I'VE GOT BALLS OF STEEL!" as a SMS tone.
One day I forgot to turn on silent mode before school, in the middle of maths class; "I'VE GOT BALLS OF STEEL!".
And everyone turned around looking at me..
