Deaf, I can cough up a few thousand bucks in the future and get a cochlear implant, I've heard that unless the deafness is related to brain damage the implants are quite likely to restore hearing.

I choose blind but would want a deaf buddy as in the movie.

I would rather be deaf, because you can still read and participate in society when you are deaf. But don't think of it too lightly; Deaf means you will never be able to listen to music again, and never have that much fun at festivals and concert!

What the hell do you think Braille is numb-nuts? Blind people can read too. Also, Deaf people have a difficult speaking because they cant even hear themselves. Even if you went deaf midway through your life, youll wind up making spluttering noises or shouting because you cannot determine how you yourself are making noises. Deaf people tend to be mutes because trying to speak is too damn difficult. Thats why the term "deaf-mute" comes from. You cant even hold a conversation unless BOTH you and the other person know sign-language. How do you expect to participate in society when deaf people have a MUCH harder time communicating with everyone else than blind people?


I would rather be blind. Sure you lose sight, but blind people have been recorded to develop sonar...SONAR. Deaf people can see their environment sure, but that doesnt mean they're still aware of their surroundings. People can sneak up on you, you cant hear people shout warnings, etc. You still miss a large amount of everything that goes on.

Blind people can make up for that by increasing their hearing. Even separating noises from others and detecting even subtle sounds everyone else cant pick out.

For me deaf is the better choice, since you can still talk (maybe through gestures) and sound isn't that big a deal compared to my vision for me.

But you should try posting this on a website dedicated to music instead of games and see what results you get there, I bet exactly the other way around

eyes account for way too much, while human hearing isn't even that good to begin with.

if i could hear shit from miles away, maybe consider being blind, but deaf wouldn't bother me one bit, plus i'd still feel/hear vibrations basically, so if something catastrophic was coming or sorts, i would still feel it.

Also, even deaf people can listen to music. You can directly stimulate the ear drums and apparently it's close (so I'm told)

And it would mean that I didn't have to listen to anything I didn't want to.

Both would be horrible. Especially since I got ticket for Rise Against this March, but being unable to see would ruin my life.
I would not be able to graduate because I couldn't read my books and really... reading 400 pages in a week in braille seems like a hassle. I would not be able to use the internet, nor read papers, enjoy video games, movies or books. Without music I would feel kinda lost, but without sight I doubt I could survive.

be careful on that..there are a few VERY VERY rage filled pro blind people in here. case in point between our posts.

Blind people have a better chance of engaging fully, as strange as that sounds, and they have a chance at being cured as well in time, or at least having optical implants, but the hearing thing is a bit different, requires a lot more networking and reworking to fix.

The poles they carry are being replaced by laser systems as well and so it's less obtrusive. But, even though I like sound, visuals have been my life and I wouldn't be able to stand being blind.

Actually you get the book translated in speech usually, there's a few gadgets that they have. Ever seen the computer they carry around without a screen? It's ridiculous.

Besides you could always plead to the government to make sign language lessons compulsory. then it wouldnt matter being deaf

Find a place where I can buy the entire Wheel of Time series in braille, find a place where I can buy all my text books in braille, find movies that I can enjoy without seeing anything find a game that can be enjoyed without seeing anything.
Being deaf is no joke, but being blind would mean I would have to learn to do everything I do now in a different way. I know how to read, but reading braille really can't be compared to reading normal letters. I can read it if I see the dots, but not by using my finger. My favourite activities require eyesight though being able to hear enhances them it's not essential.

I know there is a huge deaf community in the world, but I think being blind would have a much greater effect on my social life than being deaf would.
I wouldn't be able to read anymore (even IF I would learn Braille, still I would only be able to read books that were translated into Braille) And what about this forum or Internet itself! Also, I'm a big movie fan, and I wouldn't want to give that up. (I'm an even bigger music fan, but therein lies the dillema for me personally)

The fact that I was the one who first USED the word braille in this topic makes it's safe to say I know what braille is.

Think about it from a gamer's point of view. You can play just about any game on mute, but you can't play most games on blind.

Not that people haven't tried and succeeded.

While both have their downsides, If I had to choose, I would pick to be deaf.

Not being able to see would hamper me much more than not being able to hear, but I could still do my job, I could still enjoy gaming, and a lot of other things.

Though having to rely on reading lips, subtitles and learning sign language doesn't appeal to me either. :/
