Mech 2 was a boss of a game, like Mech 3. I really want another Mechwarrior game.
Agreed. I heard there was a game studio working on MW5, and there was a gameplay trailer released which made the longing even worse, but I think IGN mentioned it was on hold or something of the sort. And really, I can only play MW4:Mercs for so long.
I don't know what's happening with the reboot. It was a deadly trailer, though.

I'd love to play Mech 3 (my favourite in the franchise) again, but I don't think I can get it to run in Vista 64.

I feel so sorry for these poor, unfortunate souls who've never even heard of, nevertheless played Mechwarrior 2. It really was one of the most advanced and amazing games of its time and the Mechwarrior series as a whole represented a high-point in the whole 'mech' genre.

Poor, poor lost souls.

Because I so loved Mechwarrior and dedicated so much of my gaming life to playing them (as in the entire series), I have long associated the acronym with Mechwarrior 2. But, because the acronym is most commonly associated with Modern Warfare these days, I generally assume that they are referring to Modern Warfare.

A better question is the acronym GoW as it could refer to two contemporary games. Having played far more of Gears than God and seeing it used at least as often in reference to Gears, I tend to assume Gears unless the context suggests otherwise.

When MW4 was released I initially hated the changes. As I spent more time with the game however I came to realize that they actually made for a better game. A strict adherence to FASA rules resulted in a hilariously unbalanced game as people playing online rarely miss a shot no matter what the target or how fast it moves. As such games of MW3 were generally little more than playing instagib in Quake 3 with terrible controls.

If nothing else, the changes all but removed the chance of a one shot kill (indeed if all the shots arrived simultaneously, like an alpha strike of lasers, and it was sufficient damage to instantly destroy the target, the mech was instead reduced to critical damage in the affected area) and ensured that different chassis were actually different. As it was, the only difference between any of the 55 ton mechs in MW3 was how they looked as they could be outfitted identically and they would achieve very identical results. In MW4 on the other hand, the Wolfhound was notable as the only light mech that could carry a PPC and the Mad Cat MKII became known as a reknowned gauss sniper or, alternately, absurd missile carrier.

Bingo. MW2 meant mech warrior 2 to me for a decade +, but when every kid and his dog is using MW2 to mean modern warfare 2 you sort of go with the flow after a few months.
I find this sort of thing often happens actually, for example HOTU to me has always meant "home of the underdogs" but then along came hordes of the underdark.

And its still great fun to play now, I re-completed it a year or two ago, and besides being easier than I remembered it it was every bit as good.

I think the main reason I found it easier was that I finally figured our the armour allocation, turns out that back in the day i'd been building mechs with no rear armour XD.. just a little splash damage and my mech would pop.. Still, helped to hone my mad skills I guess :)

Mmmm... I'm thinking about my favourite builds now... hellbringer, gargoyle, warhammer IIC

I recognize it as modern warfare to, but wish they referenced to Mechwarrior. Honestly I wish Battletech would make a huge comeback, those games were the shit. I miss the tabletop so bad.

MechWarrior 2. 'twas a gaming staple for me right out of high school. I was so stoked when I finally got a joystick with a z-axis I could use to control torso twist, rather than relying on the keyboard.

Ritualistic sacrifice and the worship of dark deities is probably your best bet if you're desperately curious to learn about and play the old Mechwarrior 2 game... Or you could just go over to MekTek and download Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries, which was released legitimately for free by the games developers. That works as well. Not quite as good a game, but a solid entry into the series nonetheless.

There's supposed to be a new game coming out as well, but there hasn't been much in the way of news about it since it was released along with this trailer.

If you think MechWarrior is remotely similar to Modern Warfare in any way, no, it's not like you're imagining it to be. It's a pretty in-depth sci-fi simulation series from awhile back on the PC.

It's an amazing series, used to be absolutely *huge* too. Not only was it a fantastic series on the PC with the MechWarrior series, but there was a semi-related TV show, toy line, everything.

Kinda surprised so many people have never heard of it, I always thought MechWarrior was a pretty well known brand even now. Guess I was wrong... I suddenly feel kinda old.

In Mechwarrior 2, it was all about the generic Madcat. Later on however I discovered a love of the Daishi Mech. There's just something empowering about piloting something so slow and lumbering, yet capable of wiping out most other mechs in a glance. It's the King-Tiger of the Mech world. Impractical and silly on paper, prone to troubles and easily enough countered by those that know how... But my god, when one of those things is slowly lumbering your way it's suddenly the most terrifying thing in the world and you'll do anything to stay out of its crosshairs.

There are board-game type games too I remember playing them what feels oh so long ago now...

I know what you with with the slow and lumbering ones. It is for that reason I have a soft spot for the annihilator the fat lumbering monster it is. :)

Ahg I'm getting the urges to bust out all the old mech games now.

Come on now you're joshing me surely? The timberwolf had major design flaws.. the poxy arms getting shot off and the shoulder missile racks cooking off and taking out your torso springs to mind. Very few missions where I would load out a timber wolf.

As for the Direwolf... it was Dire :) The only mech I can kill in a matter of seconds in any other mech because of its massive cockpit being such an easy target. That thing is a death trap.

Tons of issues, but I loved it regardless probably because it was the most recognizable of the mechs and because damn it all, the Madcat looked sweet. And if you're taking out Daishi that easily, then whoever was piloting it was crap. With the sort of tonnage the Daishi boasts and with so much of it being omni-tech, you could kite those baby out with enough firepower to blow the legs out from just about any other mech in a single burst-fire.

Pshaw, you underestimate the advantage 100 tons worth of omni-weaponry brings to the table, especially in skilled hands. ;)

Besides, you'd be piloting a mid-range Loki who's armour is so thin a strong enough sneeze is likely to leave the pilot engulfed in flames. Just glancing in the direction of a Daishi, Atlas, or any other Assault mech has been known to lead to Loki self-destructing. Gargoyle while boasting decent armour and surprising speed for its size, not only looks silly but also far too lightly armed for its class... plus its arms are way too easy to destroy leaving the poor lil' things even more helpless so all it can do is run around and be a general pest. And the Warhammer... Actually I rather like the Warhammer. They're a solid all-round mech, versatile, fairly heavy, good armour, looks deadly... yup, it's alright!

Still no match for my Daishi though.

Cool, someone else who has fond memories of Home of the Underdogs. Hordes of the Underdark rings a bell, but not as something big enough to take over the HOTU acronym.

OT: I certainly Remember the Mechwarrior series, and I've been wanting to play my copies of Mechwarrior 2 and 3 lately; the only thing that's stopping me is a lack of time and a sneaking suspicion that my 64 bit install of Windows 7 won't play nicely with them. Heck, 32 bit Windows XP didn't play nicely with them, so I'll be shocked if a 64 bit OS can even install the stupid games.

All that aside, I associate MW2 with Modern Warfare 2 now. When the game was released, I continued to think Mechwarrior 2 when I saw the acronym for a while, but I eventually realized that pretty much everyone using the acronym these days was referring to the newer game. It's a shame that Mechwarrior, and science fiction simulation games in general, has/have disappeared in the last decade or so. I want a new Mechwarrior, a new X-Wing, and a new Wing Commander, dang it.
