Now for the last year or so since the original EEE PC, netbooks ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netbook ) have taken off with the standard becoming an Intel Atom, 1GB,8-16GB SSD or 160GB HDD,XP and the Intel 945/950. Now the last option is being contested by Nvidia's Ion platform.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/sff_ion.html

The Ion platform is the Intel Atom processor with the 9400M (like in the macbook) which Nvidia says offers up to 10x the performance over the Intel 945 while adding only $50 to current prices.

But now Intel announce their new Atom will feature the GN40 chipset that will support HD video.

Nvidia has the better performance with the Ion supporting Blu-ray playback and will the GN40 does not.

While Intel's chipset will offer a better price which is important in the netbook market wiht low prices and margins.

Nvidia Ion will be in nettops in spring while both the GN40 and Ion for netbooks will launch sometime in the summer.

Who do you think will win and who would you choose if you had the option?

What about the HD3410?

That isn't for "netbook" netbooks, but for the quasi-netbook cheap ultraportables that are popping up. Intel is making a different processor for those (although Dell decided to go with the Atom and paid for it).

The first GN40 equipped netbook will be the ASUS (who else?) EEE PC 1004DN and will also feature a DVD drive. As long as the keep the price down this thing could be a hit or it could be a marked up 1000.
