This is my personal pick. In my opinion, this track is just stunning. It is dark, it is gothic, it just screams Batman to me. It instills the personal tragedy of the character with the cautious optimism that, beneath all the stern and batarangs, he is still a hero despite the darkness.
Considered one of the two "classic" Batman themes, this song is instrumental (pun intended) in the rebuilding of Batman for the big screen. Before the Burton films redefined the superhero film genre, the last live action Batman we saw was Adam West in all his camp. Elfman's theme became so ingrained with the character that it was used concurrently alongside Shirley Walker's score for the animated series. It has all the trademark Elfman motifs, and it's just a great piece of music.
Say what you will about Joel Schumacher's Batman films, but the scores by Elliot Goldenthal did what they had to and are also great pieces of music. They still capture the dark and mysterious aspects of Elfman's score, while expanding on them and altering the tone to be more flashy and optimistic. Like the other songs on this list, the Goldenthal theme was used best to shape the films it accompanied. They're bigger, more orchestral and more flashy to fit with the movies.
Molossus, the theme used for the Nolanverse films, is the most different I feel from the rest of the themes. It is a much more intense theme, with heavy drums and a far faster tempo that really sells the Nolan films. It is harsh, driving and gritty. I wouldn't say it is an iconic theme, or even Hans Zimmer's best work by a long shot, but it is a solid piece of music that pumps up the audience.
It had to be put on here. It is THE Batman theme that anyone can hum. Everybody knows it, it's cheesy, its camp, and it is iconic.
