Okay, so the poll and the post here are slightly unrelated. I'm mostly just wondering what's everyone's favorite generation. And yes, Firered and Leafgreen are part of Gen 3 with Heartgold and Soulsilver being in Gen 4.

I for one always loved and played the first generation, but when I tried to get into the second generation, I seemed to fall flat. The time mechanic was difficult to deal with (real time in a game...), the rules behind DV and everything was rather complicated, and it changed the simplicity of the game into something too complicated.

Now, my roommate just got a DSi XL and SoulSilver and says that soulsilver improves vastly upon the game like firered and leafgreen did. I want to like gold and silver, simply because red and blue were fun, but could be a lot better.

I heard gold and silver are the best generation from a lot of friends, but I know people who like the 4th gen games even without playing the originals. So I pose you two questions:

1. Would it be worth my time to invest in the newest gen games without playing the originals?
2. What's your favorite generation and what do you like about it?
yes , yes it would but i dont think youll enjoy eving

Generation 45, after running out of ideas (welcome-mat-mon wasnt very popular), they buyed off digimons (all seasons) and monster rancher (whatever it is) to add to their long list of monsters you can collect... and they added particle effects and animated limbs (for the main character) to the game.
I find this humerus.

The second generation is where it was at. In fact, after I played it and wandered all the way through Johto and Kanto both, beating down both Blue and Red from the original games, I couldn't help but wonder why exactly Nintendo had left out the second half of Pokemon Sapphire when I first got it.

Then they released two more generations that continued to only have one region despite being in a massively upgraded format compared to the original gameboy. Sure I could make snacks and enter ribbon contests and all that jazz, but I was too busy not caring, since ribbons weren't exactly vital if you wanted to curb-check the Elite 4. Gold and Silver just added so much that was SIGNIFICANT; compared to what all the others have brought to the show, they're still top on my list.

Well 4th gen are likely people that either got caught up in the frenzy the game produced, or finally decided to try it with the world trading center.

So my opinion, 2nd generation was by far the best, a nice rounded number of 251, no Pokemon missing like in the later generations, had the most legendaries available in one game, and best of all gave access to 2 regions, which gave 16 gym battles, 2 elite 4 runs, and mount silver to defeat the true master. Honestly it's the only Pokemon in the series that made getting to level 80 easy, and high levels means tougher and more interesting battles and more fun to play. That and it was the last generation of legendaries that didn't completely suck (the rock fags and the 3 psychic types were bullshit). Honestly anyway you look at it, not only is the second generation the best to play (I like their starters the best) but it's also the most bang for your buck with what is effectively double the content of all the other games.

On one hand I enjoy the nostalgiac value of Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal, and I enjoy that... for the most part, they were original. Some of my favourite Pokemon came from those generations.
On the other hand, I enjoy the updated graphics and gameplay (as in: New moves, new strategies, new combinations of types) that Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Pearl, Diamond and Platinum brought to the Pokemon world.

However, I dislike the old clunky graphics and animations of the old ones (not really a viable reason though, as they were made quite some time ago), and I dislike the lack of originality in the new games compared to the older versions.

So, I guess I'll have to go by the starters, gameplay and the storylines.
Grass: Venusaur > Torterra > Sceptile > Meganium. (4 for Gen1, 3 for Gen4, 2 for Gen3, 1 for Gen2)
Water: Feraligatr > Blastoise > Swampert > Empoleon (4 for Gen2, 3 for Gen1, 2 for Gen3, 1 for Gen4)
Fire: Blaziken = Charizard (sorry, I love them both too much to say that one is better than the other) > Infernape > Typhlosion (4 for Gen3, 4 for Gen1, 3 for Gen4, 2 for Gen2)

Total Points:
Gen 1 = 11 + 4 for completely original story + 3 for Gameplay = 18 (21 for FireRed/LeafGreen due to improved graphics and extended gameplay)
Gen 2 = 6 + 4 for the story still being pretty original + 4 for Gameplay = 14 (Haven't played SoulSilver/HeartGold yet, so that would probably add a good 5 or 6 points to Generation 2)
Gen 3 = 8 + 3 for story + 3 for Gameplay + 2 for improved graphics = 16 (17 for Emerald)
Gen 4 = 7 + 2 for story + 3 for Gameplay + 3 for even better graphics + 2 for Electivire (he's just that cool) = 17

So, going by that system, the first generation is my favourite, but to be honest, I love each generation of Pokemon for various reasons, e.g. I loved the first gen starters, and the extended "re-visit generation 1" addition to Silver/Gold/Crystal was just so cool.

Before HeartGold and SoulSilver came out I would've said it'd be either 2nd or 4th, because I like G/S/C's game world, and I like D/P/Pl's battle system and the extended catalogue of Pokemon. But since Hg/Ss has combined my two favorite parts of the series now I can just say that.

The second generation. They'd learnt enough from the first generation to know what people wanted and hadn't got so far they were making walking polygons instead of animals.

#137, Porygon.

#100, Voltorb.

#092, Gastly.
Technically, circles are not polygons. Yeah, I know I'm being a dick...
That's three, like 4.5% of the original 150, compared to the hundreds that are just like that and make up the main meat of the newer generations. Just returning the dickier. :p

It's the three I mentioned. That's not to say they're the only ones, I just didn't think it'd be okay to make a post criticising the aspects of 152 pokémon separately.

Yeah, you're right. I mean, we could probably write net books FILLED with our over analysis of each pokemon, what it looks like, were it got it's name, etc.

they're all pretty much the same but the most recent are almost too big. The second gen, with Crystal, was the best in my opinion. Big but not too big. 250 was enough.

The 2nd, hands down. It took all the flaws from the 1st and straightened them out. And it had Scizor.

I voted second generation, although blue-red-yellow was a close second. While the first gen has many nostalgic memories for me, the second did so much to expand on the first, and even covered two districts, treating Kanto like a direct sequel to the first game.

Plus, it was nice being able to press 'Select' to ride my bike, rather than slowly going through the item menu.

I went with second-gen. I really loved first gen, but they improved so much upon it for second gen that I had to go with it. And to be honest, in terms of real game things, they haven't really done anything new since then- only shifted around what already exists, and/or taken things out.

Oh, and seriously, who needs 500 Pokemon? In the first gen, I would get ~100/150 to try and complete it, but would use ~20 regularly. In the second gen, I got ~150/250 before I realized I was still just using ~20 regularly. Third gen, same thing, and I'm up to the seventh gym in the fourth gen soul silver and hey! I'm still doing the exact same thing, and pretty much just waltzing through everything again. I try to use proper weakness/strength Pokemon at gyms to avoid the tedious status effects they love so much now and it's not that hard.

Unless Black and White actually do something NEW, like oh follow one of the movie story lines, or let you be the bad guys, or follow the show and have you have misty/brock as companions and miscellaneous adventures, I won't be getting any more Pokemon games.

It's hard to say. They all have their flaws.

Generation I and II will always have that nostalgic feeling and those classic Pokemon we've all come to love. But to me, there wasn't enough to do in Generation I. Granted, it was on Gameboy original so you can't really fit much on there.

Generation II was a great sequel. They brought 100 great new Pokemon, a whole new area, new features, fixed a lot of Generation I's flaws, and even let you go back to Kanto. However, plot sucked. Team Rocket is trying to get back together. Stop them! It was just very lacking and wasn't immersive at all.

Generation III was the first 'new' generation to me. It didn't have the same nostalgia, but I found the plot to be very intriguing. There was a TON to do from secret bases where you can go battle your friends, to the massive areas you can go explore rather that just a linear route, and even all the cool extra features that always give you something to do. The region itself was very unique and was full of different environments. Treetops, a dornamt volcano, having ash fall down from the sky, and a town built on a Corsola reef! Maybe Generation III POKEMON arent the greatest, but Hoenn was the greatest region itself.

Generation IV. What can I say. I was disappointed. After Hoenn I expected the towns to be very different and awesome. They were all the same. All new Pokemon were either generic and dull, overdone evolutions of previous Pokemon, or overdone Pokemon in general. The plot was a complete rip off Hoenn as well.

All in all which one is the best? I can't say. They were all a big part of my childhood, and it would be a shame to be picking favorites.
