I completed Devil May Cry the other day and played a third of DMC4 yesterday. It got me thinking of the cultural impact of the Dante. Do you have a favourite Dante? Do you like the name? Would you name your son Dante?

My Dante is now the merc, but I am still partial to that sweet, naive clerk.

I like the name, it rolls off the tongue. I think I would give the name to a kid; it doesn't fall in the generic name category, yet if the child does suffer embarrassment, they have the option of shortening to Dan or Danny. Everyone wins.

Kids will bully your son because they're jealous of his bitchin' name. Second to Douk of course, I spelled it Duke to impress those girls in middle school.

Sorry. I'll always associate him first with the demon hunter...I'm assuming that's the mercenary.

Dante is a: Pansy ass name. Probably a friggin emo kid too. So, poet.
It's all about the looks, my friend!

If this kid was named Dante, it would be funny and nobody would take him seriously.

If HIS name was Dante it would fit perfectly!

You all forget the one TRUE Dante. The Oldest Living Space Marine that leads the Emperor's VAMPIRE MARINES!

Adding an option would be nice... but like no one knows him so an other? If you don't want to then I refuse to vote.

There's only one Dante that matters. And that's the one that's not even supposed to be here today.

I know two people named Dante, and they're okay guys...

They're both Italian though. But FYI, normal people do still sport the name, they're not all emo goth types.

Dante is probably subject to a lot of fan fiction of the erotic variety now that he has Nero to touc- hang around with. Because of this, I don't think he's had any really big impact. He dresses sort of nice though, but he reminds me a lot of Alucard from Hellsing, someone several times more badass in comparison. :D
I would go further back and say Vincent Valentine. Just as badass, even if he wears clown shoes.

Dante Alighieri holds my vote. I had a pretty good time reading the Divine Comedy and he was pretty much the inspiration for all the others so yeah.

Plus look at the scowl on him. That could practically rival Kratos.

The only real reason why a lot of people recently have a fondness of the name Dante is because of the association with some of the characters they like.
If all of these charactes named Dante were named, say, 'Torli' then this thread would be about "The Torli" and everyone would ponder about how emo or cool the name sounds. It doesn't have anything to do with the sound or how it comes off the tongue. It's just the association.

It's the same reason people on the internet will use the name "Vegeta", even though anyone who doesn't know the Dragonball character would probably at first think of vegetables. For those who like Dragonball, Vegeta might sound intimidating.
Same thing with Dante and DMC and so on.

You forgot an option for the Inferno.
That would be the poet
Yes, but he had an inferno. I think you should give the inferno some love.
He also had Purgatory and a Paradise

OT: I'm going with the poet because the Divine Comedy gave me a good read. My second choice would be Dante Hicks.

Dante turned into a massive Dick in 4, everything he said was obnoxious and un needed, But its still an interesting name, I wouldnt go as far as name a child it in this day and age but it might be a nice name for a big dog
