The fourth wall; A term for the wall separating the virtual world with the real world. Both real in the form of devices used to interact with the game and imaginary in the form of your own mentality while playing a game. To uphold the fourth wall is to immerse yourself in the game, for a time forgetting all else and becoming your character.

How do you feel about the fourth wall ? Does the level of immersion enhance the gameplay experience for you or do you enjoy a game just fine as a spectator controlling a character ? And for those who do immerse themselves in a game, has the fourth wall made or broken some games that you might otherwise hate/love ? Do you forget there's a controller in your hand as you feel what your character feels, sweat with anticipation as the story unfolds, and wait with bated breath during a dramatic scene as if your own fate was on the line ? Is there a trend to the types of games people play and the level of immersion they are comfortable with ? And if you don't immerse yourself how do you feel about those who do ?

Personally I've always praised or admonished a game on its ability/inability to maintain the fourth wall. Myself being one of the people who immerses themselves in the game to the point where even my own mentality is affected by the events in the game. Sometimes the events in the game even feeling more real than the controller in my hands.

The fourth wall is quite important in a game because it is very difficult to pull off a good fourth-wall breaking joke. Notable exceptions are No More Heroes and Legend of Disgaea.

I generally object to breaking the Fourth Wall, but I do endorse Painting it [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PaintingTheFourthWall]

Depends on the game.

No clarification needed, really. If it's meant to be an easy-going or comedic adventure, the fourth wall isn't very important.

It is very important.

Without it, all the breakings of the 4th wall wouldn't be as funny.

(remember a time when Psycho Mantis broke the 4th wall so hard that it felt lie one got slapped)

Fallout breaks the 4th wall? Man I have to play those games...

And as for Deadpool, he is my one regret for not reading comics when I was younger. I hope his upcoming movie does him justice (or at least makes us forget the Ryan Reynolds role in X-Men: Wolfy there).

It depends. My opinion on fourth wall is as follows: either it's there all the time without any disruptions - OR it's getting discussed, leaned on, and even broken all the time. There's really not much in terms of middleground for me.

Eternal Darkness low sanity effects. You need some 4th wall interaction for half of them to make sense and be amusing.

Oh, yeah...the first fallouts have a lot of 4th wall breaking ness, like when a follower gets really injured-I think his name was Cassidy- he'll say "You know, I can't reload a past save like you can..." And Deadpool sucked in XO:W, pfff...can't make jokes, shoots optic blasts, has retractable katanas...nothing like the comics

The 4th wall is there to provide some interaction between the player and the virtual character they control...also it's funny when it's broken

I think breaking the fourth wall is much more effective in theatre. I've never encountered it done that well in my games.

Heh heh heh. But the damage was done. That was my first taste of Deadpool and I am actually guilty of enjoying it. But after making the mistake of telling people that, they quickly remedied the situation by shoving my face into the comics (I guess that means the mistake was a blessing in disguise). Once again I hope that the Deadpool movie at the very least erases much of the damage by XO:Hugh Jackman.

I believe that if the 4th wall is to be broken, it is in a way to add humour to a situation.

But now I remember Malcolm in the Middle, and the genius method of completely breaking down the 4th wall...

Hmm...

Well, they were right to do that, because you haven't experienced "the Merc with the Mouth" until you read them.
P.S. you can also unlock a whole audio clip of breaking the 4th wall by beating Marvel Ultimate alliance 2

4th wall is boring. Getting rid of all distractions that stop you "pretending" to be a character is a waste of time. You will either empathize with a character or not and more 4th wall breaking information and third person information often helps you empathize with them.

That's how I see it anyway.

My biggest fear with the Deadpool movie is that
This guy:

Is supposed to act as:

and:

at roughly the same time.
I hope there is no conflict.
