On one hand, this topic name and its poll insults me.

On the other hand, .hack insults me.

Perfect fit!

I was partly into the original 4 on the PS2. A pretend-MMORPG gone haywire with open-ended travel was an interesting concept. The gameplay was not the best - basically a dumbed down version of Kingdom Hearts - but it was novel. Finally, we had our ambiguously pubescent anime trollops [http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/6688/1bbe774op9.jpg] to tug at parts of my mind my Creator put there without my permission. It was the typical Japanese model of RPG success.

However, not even the wiles of the dark corners of my imagination were enough to keep me compellingly playing the series through Mutation (second game in the series). There was about as much gameplay as would justify 3/4th a game in there, and attempting to extend it across four games was asking too much. Perhaps if you were used to throwing your money down the drain from Pokemon or YuGiOh cards, the ridiculousness of it was lost on you, but I had better priorities.

I liked the .Hack project as a whole, including the other media types it extended to, but I will admit to getting tired of the series by the time G.U. came out.

I loved and only paid any attention to the four for the PS2.
I thought the techniques Kite used could've been more effective, I mean, he did some of the least damage of the characters in the game.

I still have a save file of 1-3 on my memory card. Never played 4 because it won't go down from it's stupid price of 35$ used (hell's up with that?)

I've been getting into the Manga's based on the video games and anime. They're cheap to buy and don't extend beyond 4 volumes for each series. I'm enjoying the storyline overall, especially Haseo's in G.U.

I think the idea of an MMO going nuts and affecting peoples personal life is fantastic and hopefully they keep exploring The World. They still have a lot of potential to tap into.

If this were all it is, I wouldn't call it that unusual. ;)

It's really more of the idea that somebody developed a virus which vibrates just right through people's virtual reality helmets that it puts them into a coma. Various agents ranging from rogue AIs to hackers tend to exploit said virus on the unsuspecting people who log into the game depending on which series you're following. In a bit of difficult-to-conceive logic, said virus also holds the people who are in a coma hostage, so you have to right the wrong to free them.

I'm playing the series over at my cousins (he has the originl 4) and its kinda cool. The premis is intriguing. Odd, but interesting. I like all the mangas and animes about it, so .hack is cool, except for GU.

I was thinking of getting in to the .hack anime. What series would you recommend for a newbie?

People still care about .Hack? Hmmm, I saw all the games in my local Gamespot yesterday... but they didn't really appeal to me the first time, I don't know why they would the second.

Of the two TV series, I'd say DotHack // Twilight Bracelet is the more entertaining (if you don't mind the mild incestuous vibe through the duration of it). It just has a much better idea of MMORPG mania, better artistic style, and a better overall execution than anything else DotHack related.

The original DotHack // Sign is really more of a strange Sci-Fi soap opera (replace the mild incestuous vibe with a mild lesbian one). You'll either spend the entire series confused as to why Tsukasa is such a spineless panzy ("waah my brain was stolen and I don't know what's going on") or one hand curiously in your pocket the whole time glad you finally found that anime that captures your pent up emotions about being a girl trapped in a man's body who wants a relationship with a flat-chested crippled girl who doesn't know you while avoiding the relentless friendship of a hot cheerleader who does nothing but help you. Oh, sorry, I should have said "Tsukasa is a spineless pansy" twice.

As for Dothack //Liminality, it was probably the most artistically interesting of them all, but it's also pretty damn dull. Hurray, watch people run around in the real world (anime but outside of the game) acting confused because things are happening in the game that they don't understand. It also requires you buy the four PS2 games to see... but I'm assuming you won't be purchasing any of them, you torrent fiend.

If you're looking for quality anime, check out none of them. DotHack was an extensive Bandai-fueled plot to score some cash across the PS2 and Anime. It was brilliantly executed, but the artistic result was mediocre pushed to decent thanks to a great cash infusion, at best.

I like the concepts in the story, but the execution in the games and the animes are usually not very good.
