This was a question that came up in my Communication Arts class a few days ago.
The Holocaust, the well-known mass slaughter of eleven million people deemed "undesirable" by the Third Reicht during World War II, was a horrific atrocity. After the end of WWII, when the Nuremburg Trials (in which Nazi leaders were sentenced for their crimes) commenced, the newly-formed United Nations convened to create laws against genocide and the mass, systematic killing of a group of people.
In the sixty or so years since the Nuremburg trials, there have been several instances that have been classified as "genocide". The Bosnian massacres, Rwanda, and a few other lesser-known killings have occurred, and been comparatively quickly dealt with.
However, I began to think. All of these killings since the Holocaust did not occur during a time where the superpowers of the world were entrenched in either a depression or a deadly war. Were a war to occur at the same time as a "genocide", would as much attention be taken to deal with the issue?
Could the Holocaust happen again? Could a slaughter of eleven million people go unabated ever again?
"Never again, I hope."
For clarity's sake, I've placed the link to Merriam-Webster's definition of a "genocide."
