Now before I start:

Yes, yes, we all know that particular view Trekkie Monster, but according to the most delicious Stephen Fry on QI, a survey was done during the Bush administration for the ACLA that declared that less than 1.1% of the Internet [http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2006/nov/23/guardianweeklytechnologysection2] was "gentlemen's special interests" as Jimmy Carr so delightfully put it.

So, purely on a Escapist view point, how much of the Internet is for Porn?

(Obvious Rule Quote: No mucky pictures, video or the like please. Ta :))

it is much more. i guess i'll have to go with you're third option.

and 1.1% is bullshit. because it's about the amount of usage, not the percentage of it on the web.

I think that after spam... pr0n takes the second place just ahead of pirating when it comes to web traffic used.

But numerically how many web-pages is made for that purpose, that might actually be fairly low. Megasites to rule them all and all that jazz.

Well, 1.1%, according to the article, is a figure based upon Google indexes (so, basically, how many websites occupying Google's databases that contain sexually explicit material, or something like that).

I think "The Internet is for Porn", references what people use the Internet for, rather than allocation of infrastructure. Hell, even that might not be true anymore.

Rule 34 and 35 do not state that everything on the internet is porn. They just state that there is porn of everything, and if there isn't, it's being made...

Obviously, that study is full of blatant lies and slander. The internet is full of porn, and search engines that lead you to porn.

Well, the Internet revolves on three things; opinions, stupidity and porn.

People are far more accepting of the third, so whilst it might not be the Internets sole currency, its by far its most popular.
Forgot piracy. Pirate bay alone was in the top hundred visited sites. May have only been for a day or two, but still.

And does that thing count fetish pornography? Because that would probably triple the number...

Not much of it, I imagine. The 1.1% wouldn't surprise me. For instance, if you can search for porn in Google (I don't use safe search - nor to I watch porn) most words that people will search sure wont show up with porn in all 100,000 odd pages.

Another point is that here it is referenced that 1.1% of websites are porn, not taking into account the number of web pages, images, videos etc within the websites (apparently, that would lift the number up significantly, not that I'm an expert or anything....).

It did reference that fact, in that of the "safe" websites, a random selection were checked to see if they contained any "adult" references.

50/50... one part porn, one part facebook/myspace/etc, one part forums/blogs/boards/livejournals/deviantart/etc - anything like this that gives the unwashed masses an outlet for largely unobserved self expression, unwarranted validation of crazy lifestyles or viewpoints, and general arguing; one part ads, one part cybersquatted addresses offering "what you want, when you want it", one part shopping sites, one part flash games, and one part actual useful content. Not counting all the newsgroups, email, p2p, traffic for games like WoW, and gradually dying-off personal freehost sites.

But out of that, about 50% is porn, and the "actual useful content" is the 1.1% Bush referred to. He was holding the chart upside down. It's probably about the same now, given that the proportion taken up by Geocities has vanished, but it was itself paradoxically responsible for some of the useful stuff. About 50% of the useful stuff is taken up by Wikipedia and therefore is still of questionable value.

Edit: crap, I forgot Youtube, Failblog and all the endless webcomics. That's going to crowd things out even more.

I once heard that only about 1/3 of the Internet is porn. That's less than it has been hyped up to be.
