So I just found one of my old english assignments from elementary school. Its about the old story, called The Lady or the Tiger. Bassically we had to read the story, and then had to give our opinion on what we think would have happened.

The story in a nut shell is this: Very long ago this princess is in love with a young man from the village, (Note: these were very barbaric times) the two would see each other in secret untill her father finds out. So as punishment the young man has to go into this stadium of sorts, and chose one out of two doors. One door has a tiger, while the other has a woman behind it. If he gets the tiger he dies, but if he gets the woman he gets to marry her.

There is no way for him to know which is which. BUT, the princess managed to find this out, so she has to tell him which door to open, but if he gets the woman and lives he still won't be able to be with the her. So the big question is this, did the princess act barbaric like her father and send him to death out of jealousy? Or did he live and marry the lady? What do you all think?

(Here is the full story: http://www.eastoftheweb.com/short-stories/UBooks/LadyTige.shtml )

Edit: Read the story, he has no weapons, or anyway to escape. He has to choose.

The way I see it, she didn't really bear him ill will. I just figure he went through the door with the lady.

The tiger.

See, the lady never really loved him.
It was her intention to get him into the tiger room all along.
DUN DUN DUN. (I'd laugh if thats what the author really wanted)

I sure would send him to the tiger, no one ever thinks about feeding the tiger! But I guess it is the lady.

he will open the door for the tiger but instead of a tiger there is a lady! because her father (of the princess) gave her the wrong information to see if she really loved the man!
or am i overthinking things?

in that case he dies

I always assumed she put the tiger into the ladies room so the tiger would eat the lady and be too full to eat the guy. (the princess is a jealous whore)
Or whichever door he opened will cause a rift in the space time continuum since his destiny was never written by the author and therefore never happened meaning that his life as well as the entire world of the story ended there... unless there is a sequel.

Why cant he marry the tiger?

EDIT: actually no that sounded a bit furry.

Why cant he just climb out of the arena and marry the princess. if the tiger is behind a door then the door needs to be opened before it gets out there is two other options than the ones you listed.

Escape the arena.

Open both doors at the same time. Whatever one hs the woman you run into it quickly and shut the door behind you so the tiget doesnt get you

I think he should fight the tiger. Then if he wins, he is a badass, and could go kill the king.

Then he could pick any woman he wanted.

He defeated a Tiger with his BARE HANDS.

He would pretty much be awesome at that point.

The lady. Then the princess kills the ***** and gets the man to himself.

I actually said that to my teacher... not including the ***** part obviously.

I'd advice the guy knock on the door and find out which door contains which inhabitant.

Tiger. Because he'd be such a badass that he could beat it by staring down at it.

Or because "tiger" doesn't necessarily mean fully grown man killer. She could pay someone to change it so that it's a tiger cub in there rather than a big one.

The doors were heavily insulated. It say so in the story.

Can't she let him pick the lady then? If he "gets to marry her" what stops him from......not marrying the strange lady?

He gets to marry a different lady. Not the actual princess. And in those times once your married its for life. If you were caught cheating they would stone you to death. So it's basically this: does he die, or marry another woman?
