Simple poll today folks, just wondering your opinions on the Mars Volta. Personally I love their first two albums, once you venture past that the self indulgence factor begins to rise exponentially, although I have liked songs here and there since then (Aberinkula is in my opinion one of their best songs). Share your thoughts, public opinion on these guys seems to be fairly divided.

EDIT: I assumed they were faily well known, apparently not, so here goes with a few select tracks:

I had to sit through about 30 minutes of them at Bonnaroo before Nine Inch Nails played. Sorry dude, no offense to you if ya like 'em, but I really didn't like it.

They're pretty damn good actually, they're a tad out there but they do have a fantastic background in At the Drive in.
Televators is a nice tune for a chill out.

Unless you just want to create a statistical bias.
I voted "Wank?" because it's the closest option to "Who?".
Seriously, I've never heard of those guys.

I got "Frances the Mute" a while back. Let me tell these two something, filling your songs with pointless white noise does not make up for a lack of ideas. I don't mind ambient music, but when they're doing their crazy prog-noodling for a while then suddenly shift into weird noise I grow tired in a hurry.

Love 'em. De-loused is one of my favorite albums. They can go a bit overboard with ambience/noise fills (was it necessary to start the latest album with a minute and a half of silence?)

The Mars Volta just get better with every album. I can't wait for the new album.
Come such a long way since At The Drive In.

Pretty much this. I tuned out after Amputechture went further down the path of Francis the Mute rather than the more enjoyable days of De-Loused in the Comatorium and the Tremulant EP. Francis the Mute has some amazing moments in it, but they are separated by entirely too much wankery. To get the most out of their music, you really need to lie down, close your eyes, listen to the entire album in one go, and concentrate on what is being pumped into your ear drums. The problem is that if you have to work this hard to enjoy their music, then something is wrong with it.

They have alot of awesome stuff, and a lot of absolute garbage passed off as music. I think they are amazing when they stop banging the drums so hard. I didn't like Goliath, but I'm a fan of Octahedron and most of the other three.

I bought the first album. Loved the guy's voice and the first few songs were geat, but I always find my attention span wavering when it gets to the quieter ambient parts.

It can feel with thier music that there is sometimes too muh happening (which is wierd as my fave musician is Devin Townsend)

Then again One Armed Scissor was the only At The Drive in Song I liked.

Haven't really heard anything else.

Haven't heard a whole lot of them, but what I've heard was alright. I wouldn't listen to them for too long, but they're certainly different from the mainstream music today.

I havent listened to their stuff but they do an amazing live performance. I saw them supporting RHCP and was pretty impressed.

It always weirds me out to hear anyone talk about Cedric since I know him fairly well (My brother and I are actually in one of at the drive-in's music videos for like a second). I like tMV a lot prog rock is interesting.
Bedlam in Goliath was very difficult for me to listen to though and I hated it. Made me lose interest in this group.
