IMO half the reason for the existence of the PS3 was to help sony win the format war. If you think about it, it helps push blu-ray media. Now, people who own PS3s can also play Blu-ray movies. Thus that could increase sales of those, giving Sony more money.

Additionally, it helps assure that a Sony blu-ray player is in the households as opposed to a 3rd party one. People who already own a PS3 have no reason to go buy a phillips blu-ray player, do they? Hence it keeps their competitors from making money.
Actually they do. PS3's use 5 times as much energy when playing a blu-ray movie than a regular blu-ray player does.
do people really care about how much energy they use to play a 2 hour movie??

Well today a lot of people do care about their energy usage, whether it is because of the economy or because of global warming(if you believe in either of those).

It's expensive, but not just the console, you also have to include the games, of which the good ones are expensive.
Most next-gen games are $60 when they are released, so I don't see how the game prices factor into anything in this situation.

Ummmmm, yeah, I wish! I'm in Oz. Most new release 360 games come in at $99, but you can usually shop around and buy them retail for $79. Most new release PS3 games come in at $119! Go figure!

Sorry, on topic. I think that the price is almost right! haha. I mean, you do get a blu-ray player, which is nice. If the PS3 were backwards compatible with PS2 games, then I'd say the price is spot on... but it ain't, so it's probably $50 - $100 too expensive... didn't stop me buying one though.....

The PS3 is overpriced. Analysts and developers agree on this.

I would likely buy one if it weren't so expensive.

I'm sorry to hear that, I was getting agitated hearing the price difference around the web as well, but you put it into perspective. I didn't even think of other countries economy/currency. My bad.

High cost of PS3 + minimal exclusive titles + I already have a 360 (because it's cheaper, not fanboyism) = PS3 is the system in a few console generations I don't own

It's all good dude. We're totally used to getting screwed on price down here... I have no idea why, smart people import and save themselves $$$$$... I don't, I like to support my local games retailer but it definately makes a difference when choosing a game.

I have both the 360 and PS3... why would I buy a game on the PS3 when it's going to cost me $20-$40 more than 360? Plus achievements > trophies by a long shot...

I got my ps3 for 400$ and found that to be a great price for several reasons
1. I don't have to pay 60$ a year to play online, if you've had live for 2 years you've already made up the the price difference between the the cheaper models of ps3 and xbox.
2.the thing can go wireless I don't have to go out and spend 20 to 30 dollars on a 200 feet of cable to run to my router and create a tripping hazard to my younger siblings, especially on the stairs.
3. Diversity, most of the xbox games are just shooters while the ps3 has some nice variety in it's exclusives like disgaea 3 or valkyria chronicles
4. the blu-ray... ya i don't really use it either
5. the fact that I can hook it up to my hard-drive and run movies over my tv with out having to buy any annoying extra cables or anything
6. the front end which is a lot cleaner and less filled with adds for new dlc
7. the lack of red rings, and the fact that nudging the console while it's running won't destroy your games

I have both consoles and all my 360 does is gather dust while I get constant use out of my wii and ps3, over all I have to say that at the moment the ps3 is my favorite console and that the price is perfectly fine.

For me it is too expensive for what it is. For the amount of games I would want to play on it, I can't justify it. I don't want a Blu-Ray player, I actually prefer DVD or VHS resolution and I dont have, and can't afford, a HD TV. And then I'm only interested in games like Flower or Noby Noby Boy, and I can't justify spending that much just for those two games.

More expensive than Xbox. A lot. Elite Xbox costs a bit less than a standard PS3...

Also, games are super-expensive. At least twice as expensive as PC games.

It's expensive considering I don't use the blu-ray function at all.

I would have rathered they had a different model which negates blu-ray and has backwards compatibility, that would have worked a lot better for me personally.

The ps3 might be the most expensive system to start with, but in the long-run, it's the cheapest. You don't have to pay £60 a year to play online, and you don't need to buy attatchment after attatchment for the controls.

xbox's you get less for your money (and the red ring of death)

I bought my ps3 on release and had no problem with the cost. Consequently I still have the same ps3 as it hasn't broken once.

I bought my xbox before my ps3 and have had 4 different ones so far.

Also when you add up xbox live, a wireless adapter, hd drive, bigger harddrive etc the xbox gets expensive. Thus I have abandoned my xbox for the ps3. (I think the 360 is still in my wardrobe :S )
