I have been an avid race fan for a very long time. I have been to many auto races, and played many racing games. Some were good, but a great many were terrible. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I've played one good racing game in my entire gaming career: F1 2002. To me, every other racing game is sh*t! We can argue physics, damage models, and overall feel, but there are just two aspects of racing games that frustrate me more than any other.
1) Do we really need 100+ different makes and models of vehicles? No, we don't. How many cars do you race with on a consistent basis in Gran Tourismo? Forza? Much has been made about the plethora of cars at your finger-tips, but the blunt and honest truth is that you spend 10min looking, and then never think about them again. Do we really need four different models of Honda Civics? I think not.
2) Are you tired of driving around the same make-believe track over and over again? I sure am! Take a hint Forza and GT (others included), sure, they look great, but they are rubbish. How about you stop flogging yourselves and your pseudo "race tracks" (GRID, you're the worst offender) and shell out the bucks for the licenses to some REAL courses. Spa, Monza, Jerez, Bathurst, the old Adelaide GP circuit, Hockenheim, Interlagos, the REAL Long Beach GP Circuit, etc. Sure, it's great to see them in your game, but when you only give me three or four, I'm forced to call you out for bullsh*t!
The point is, we hype ourselves up over meaningless features in games. It would be great if we could get a REAL racing game, not one that focuses on how many cars or fake tracks they have.
