then you are looking at a very small list, because i cant think of a game where its one hit kill all the way. possibily because that would take away any challenge from the game.

besides there was only one enemy where you had to do that. and they weren't that common
I'm not advocating one shot kills all the way, but if an enemy's going to take a magazine to the face and laugh it off, they should at least have the decency to look like the sort of thing that could do that. Giant robots, demons, wibbly monsters from beyond space, these are all valid candidates for the "I don't care about bullets" club. A dude is not.

Also, the entire rest of Black is trying it's damndest to look as "real" as possible, to the extent that the title should really have been "Gun Porn", so it's deeply incongruous to empty 30 7.62x39mm into someone's face and not have them die of it. (and then dominate exactly the same enemy with a shotgun.)
i know what you mean, but the people looked exactly like Jason from Friday the 13th and think how hard it is to kill him. there have been at least 10 films and the **** still isnt dead.

besides i dont think Black ever professed to realism, just to being an damm fine looking game, and quite a lot of fun

Also, for a pure FPS, surely Time Crisis has to be mentioned? You even get a plastic gun with it!
Hmm, it's a rail-shooter - although it is in first person. That has more to do with gunning through a level under a certain time, and it only has one gun, so I had to give it a miss on the poll. I guess you could call it a "pure FPS" if you wanted to.

And Time Crisis was my third game I ever played! *high-five*

Half-Life has puzzle elements! No pure shooter should have any trace of puzzles.

I said Quake, but any arena shooter would do.

Oh, wait. Why is Half Life here? It has PLOT!! Lots of it!
Yeah, but no good plot. It's another aliens invade and there's only one bad enough dude to save the day - Gordon Freeman.
But its more deep than that! Or at least it is with paired with HL2 and episodes.

Metroid Prime. Pure, unadultered greatness, that is what I would like to classify, the bst FPS series to ever grace this world. Of course this is my opinion....but it is the right opinion.

The rush of firing a rocket launcher at an oncoming helicopter.
The satisfaction of chainsaw-ing a demon in two.
The thrill of mowing down a horde of Nazis with a machine gun.

You've probably felt these adrenaline-fuelled moments before, or at least something similar. These moments in an FPS game, when done well and consistently, help to make the purest form of an FPS. There are many first-person shooters nowadays with silly regenerating health,
As opposed to the very realistic health pack that automatically revive multiple bullet shots including to the head.

vehicle sections, teamwork and contrived plots that stray from the real experience - killing everyone in sight, boss fights and blowing shit up. This is something you don't get to enjoy as often these days, which is such a shame - blowing a demon's entrails out of his back would be a sight to behold with our next-gen graphical capabilities.

So, my fellow Escapians - what is the purest form of the so-called FPS? Remember, I'm not asking for the best FPS ever made, just your opinion of the purest form.

I'm gonna have to say Serious Sam

Well I don't know what you mean by purist but I will have to go with Counter Strike since it is the ultimate test of FPS skill. Atleast I think so.

I would say Doom, but without mouse control it's more of a proto-FPS. (I love it dearly, though, and source mods add the mouse aiming)

I dunno, the first game that game to my mind when I saw the title was CS. Meaningless, endless shooting and killing round after round. But I chose Half-Life since it was the closest I could get.

In general it matters how you mean pure, but I take it to mean the genesis of all modern FPS games, so my vote goes to Half-Life as it defined the modern FPS by setting an incredible formula that should be followed more often.

It really isn't. When something requires several paragraphs of discussion to even figure out where the main enemies came from, it's not deep, it's just plain cruel. Even after an entire game (Half Life 2), both of the following episodes and guidance from the internet I still only have a vague idea of who the Combine are or how they work.

Serious Sam.

No pretentions, just hordes and hordes (and hordes) of enemies and really big bosses.
Mmmm... this is a game that doesn't fuck around. See a rocket launcher in the middle of the room? You know you want it. Pick it up. Yeah, feel the power of being able to launch... oh shit, 78 demons just spawned into the room screaming for your flesh. That's FPS, baby.

They are an inter-dimensional Empire, that enlist by force the population of the planets they conquer into their ranks, and clean the said planets of resources to turn into profit or just use them for something else. They synthezise alien wildlife and most of their war gear is based on the gear there already is on the planets they conquer.

See didnt take that long.

I would actually say painkiller would be the purest because there is no other goal then to just kill everyone. No key hunting, no puzzle solving just go this way and kill everyone that spawns in this room. Sure you could go around looking for the hidden items but the game doesn't force you too. You could get by perfectly well without them.

Man, why did they stop making this kind of FPS? I do like the post-Goldeneye methodic, strategic kind of FPS's, but sometimes I just want to play a game that's like "Take this gun. Shoot everything that moves with it. Eat some schnitzel if you are hurt." Then do that in a lot of environments.

I chose Doom, but I haven't played Quake or Serious Sam: those might change my mind.

Also, I don't think CS is a 'pure' FPS because of the ridiculously long downtime to respawn if you get shot (i.e., only in the next round).

Yes, but when I've played through all of the games multiple times and I still don't know that, you can't really credit the game with brilliant story telling. And I dare say you probably got that explanation from somewhere on the internet. Okay, so maybe it is hidden in the game somewhere, but that's not storytelling, that's being forced to scrape together random guys because your character can't ask and everyone's too retarded to explain. Even Eli. Yeah that's right, I called the dead guy retarded.

Fuck Eli.

EDIT: We should probably continue this discussion in PM if at all, because even though I thoroughly enjoy Half Life, it has a lot of faults which get overlooked and I've been itching for a chance to rant about them.

of those Duke Nukem. Mostly cuz I had the most fun with it back when I was 15. Ahhh... Memories. Serious Sam definitly would be my 'other' choice though.
