Well, I use Chrome and every time I hit the X (it's blue for me) the page stops pretty quickly. If it does take me to the site I accidentally clicked on, it's because I was too slow to hit the stop button in the first place.

Chrome is pretty speedy.

Oh, you mean the "Stop Navigation" button. It works, but you do have to supply a new place to go. I hardly use it.

I use it all the time with the Stop! Hammertime! add-on for Firefox.

I does work, and I think it's useful for a situation where pressing back would resend some information you've entered on a form... like if you were ordering something online, pressing back may reload the previous page and order 2 items, but stop would just cancel the page loading without duplicating anything.

It was also more useful in the days of dial-up modems, but now you have to have pretty quick reactions to stop a page before it loads.

It stops downloading any more information from the site, but it displays what it has pulled down, so you will have to hit back anyway.

OP's referring to the X beside the Refresh button.
The Stop button? Would have been a lot easier if OP had just stated that's what they meant.

I don't use it, I don't understand why anyone would need to.

Yeah man, I use Firefox and sometimes a page on my computer will stop prematurely stop loading and I'll need to stop buttfucking my CPU with background programs to fix the issue. I don't see any issue with it stopping navigation as it's designed to do.

I use Opera and it tends to work instantly for me. On rare occasions I have to use Task Manager but for the most part it seems pretty effective.

Guess I'm not the only one how came here and was slightly disappointed.

OT: On Chrome, my X works just fine(maybe it has a half of second lag sometimes, but otherwise it's fine)

Top left, directly under the word "History"...also, please erase that next time before you let me borrow your computer.

Eh it depends on when I actually press it. If I get there before the page is halfway done it works otherwise it's a gamble.

Usually I'm not fast enough...by the time I click it the page has already loaded.
Maybe if I improved my reaction times (instead of just swearing and fumbling with the mouse)
