So, what is up with it. I have got 3 strikes against me already. One today for posting something off topic in my own thread. LOL! Someone trolled my post and I called him out on it and got a report and a warning for being off topic and trolling lol.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.304925-Looking-fora-Good-Dark-Comedy#12241789

I think some people here are too quick to hit the button.

I got one here for posting my opinion on an opinionated topic. WTF?! Whats wrong with my opinion at least it was on topic.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.287320-Poll-Are-Girls-more-Complicated-than-Boys?page=3#11348949

My third one is gone, but I can understand it I guess. The post was low in content. I think I posted a picture describing my thoughts and added just a few words after it. Though it was still on topic, but I guess not posting enough is a bad thing.

Do you guys think the report button is abused and the people who send out warnings send them out too often?

Don't report me for this post plz =P

FYI, the report button is not automated. People report, the mods look at your posts, and they decide whether or not to follow up. If you feel THEY'RE overzealous, that's a whole other issue.

For the record, I do not, but then again, I have a clear record, so I may not be the best to ask.

Yeah, don't mention someone's trolling, just report and otherwise ignore it.

That second one comes off as extremely sexist, which people kinda frown on nowadays.

The first one was justified.

to quote you:
Trololololol Nice I give you 6/10 for effort.
That is short and not very constructive at all.
You responded like that to a long and what does not seem to me like a troll post.

Deserved a warning there.
This is The Escapist, not /b/.

EDIT:
Looked at your other post.
Blatantly sexist and it shows that you have a really sad and wrong idea of women.

The reason it was a troll post was because of his review of Fargo and the movies he recommended. None of the movies were dark comedies and the review of Fargo had nothing to do with the movie. It was a very bad post that he posted just to be funny. Therefor a troll.

You thought they were both justified too? Good to know I'm not the only one who thought OP just needs to follow the rules better. Besides, they were just warnings. It's not like he got probation for them.

Well the topic about females I can justify. I mean the topic as about who is more complex then who. I mean not everyone can be neutral to the subject and think of everyone as equals. That was an opinion of my own experience with women. Everyone thinks differently of each other. If you make a topic of peoples personal opinions to women like that I don't think you should get reported just for sharing your own opinion. That is just dumb. Sexist topic brings sexist posts IMO.

The first one was a useless post that contributed nothing to the discussion. Also, you fed the troll by giving him attention.

The second one was very offensive and sexist.

And you already accepted the third.

OT: Nope. Even if someone went around spamming the report button, it's up to the mods if you get a warning.

When your opinion is obviously offensive like that, it's better to just skip that thread.

There really isn't a problem with enforcement currently. A couple of versions of the rules ago (the version before they implemented the health bar) there were some ban-worthy offenses that weren't actually in the rules, and people got in serious trouble for things that they had no way of knowing were taboo. The current version fixes that, and just about everyone I've seen banned since then has been either a new guy (or an old member who had around 100 posts in two or three years) joining in on the comments without lurking first, trolling, violating the DBAD rule, and generally acting like this is an un-moderated forum -- in other words, they deserved it.

Gotta love it when people blame those in authority when they blatantly break the clearly defined rules.

The only time I've ever reported anyone on any website ever was when someone threatened to actually kill me. Other than that, I've never reported anyone. Even people who've offended me personally.

But yes. Escapist seems to be more prone to vexatious reporting than other websites. I don't know why that is.

(Be careful. I think you can actually be banned for discussing the moderators decisions. The walls have ears, if you know what I mean.)

I don't ever report, just because I don't like people reporting me.

The escapist judges not severity but quantity of violations.
I just don't think it's fair to report someone on small things.

(And my small violations are about to end me here)

I kind of think that our forum health meter should heal faster(im still on probation from low content stuff about four months ago) but beyond that I really haven't had to much of a problem. I only report people for trolling, low content doesn't bother me much.

I have no fucking clue on the matter. I know that I don't abuse it. That's all I can account for.

Part of it's because it's so easy to report people; I've even occasionally done it on accident because the button is so big (and right next to the badges; ever have your hand twitch while you're trying to mouse over one of those?) For the rest, I think we like to keep the riff-raff out. I know when I see someone who is clearly trolling, but doing so in such a way that they aren't openly violating any rules, I'll engage them in conversation until they slip up and do something ban-worthy. I don't like seeing trolls in a forum I frequent.

I agree with this, you have to keep in mind that you don't run the website, nor is anyone forcing you to post here. Follow the rules and you will be ok, or just don't post anything.

I've only ever used it once, for a really inappropriate comment. You should only really be using it if you're genuinely offended by something. If it's a bad troll someone else will report it anyway.

In my experience, there's a pretty fair amount of reporting going on. I wouldn't say there are too many reports, especially given the size of the moderation team. The only issue I could see would be the reasoning for a handful of reports. I've been occasionally mystified by why something was on the moderation queue. I tend to clear several reports for that reason.

Also, given some of the posts I'm seeing in this thread, I'd like to toss up a few points. They're vague, and general tips I'd recommend for the forum, but I'd like to think they can help.
[ul][li]Web wizards recommend waiting 24 hours after something annoys you until you reply. That's a bit much, for me, but the concept is sound. Arguments, flaming, and aggression make up a lot of the reports I look through. If you find yourself getting angry, either take a cooler and go grab something to drink or make a sandwich. If you still feel that way after you've taken a break, figure out why. Address the reasoning for why a post upsets you, not that it upsets you. If someone who's itching for a fight finds the ammo to start one, they possibly will. That's a bad way to be.[/li]
[li]Everyone can be wrong. Everyone. This is something I find a lot of people have difficulty wrapping their mind around. I've seen arguments start, hold, and run across multiple threads at users' throats. That tends to encourage arguments everywhere, and makes fights run rampant. Often, when addressed, both would feel validated in saying whatever they want to/about the other person because "I'm not wrong." If the reason an argument is persisting because "I'm not wrong," then it's possible that you'll be reported repeatedly for people who think you are.[/li]
[li]...Everyone. Ultimately, anyone makes a mistake is likely to have simply made a mistake. This can include the mod in question. If you feel like you've been given the short end of the stick, feel free to bring it up in the Moderation Team usergroup, or send out an appeal through the Contact Form. To be honest, I've seen several very good points brought up in the group, and have had their various forms of mod wrath repealed. Just remember that being told "I don't feel this post deserved the punishment" is a lot nicer than "you guys are fucking idiots," and more likely to seem like the former was a genuine problem, and the latter was "not wrong."[/li][/ul]

Warmest regards,
Nuke
