My friends say that I am too blunt and honest, and they call me evil...is it bad telling the truth all the time?

If you tell the truth all the time you can come off as mean or as your friends described you evil. If you lie to make someone feel better or protect their feelings then there is nothing wrong with it. Hurting someone by telling the truth is worse than telling them a lie to protect their feelings.

I think it takes a balance, and really depends on the situation. If a lady friend is wearing an outfit that isn't exactly flattering and you point it out unprovoked then yea, that's a dick move. Now if she asks for an honest opinion then by all means be honest.
A little bit of tact goes a long way.

not at all, i used to put on airs and be nice, but I've been much more successful since I stopped being "the nice guy". thats kindof sad since that means chivalry is truly dead. but oh well dont lie through ur teeth and just tell that bastard to eat ur shit!

This thread was done last week, though it was more thought out arguing Truth v. Tact.

From your username though, it seems you don't mind the contraversial. So I'll say that continue being yourself. Just don't be a complete douche.

You don't have to be blunt to be honest. Your friends are probably onto something. Learn how to deliver the truth without coming off like an asshat and your life will improve immeasurably.

There is nothing wrong with sugar coating or bending the truth under certain circumstances.

It's better to be tactful in my opinion. I know someone who's too blunt and he comes of as unpleasant sometimes.
Be honest, just try to balance it with tact.

like everyone else said, be tactful and tell the truth, but try to take others into consideration while doing it, I mean the truth can't be a bad thing, afterall it is part of the Old Code: "His word speaks only truth."

Looking at the title I thought this was going to be a classic conspiracy thread that would blow my mindI knew wasn't true but ah well...

I lie very rarely but I don't willingly offer unkind truths either and I owuld advise you to do the same. Being rude does not mean you are telling the truth and being blunt just means your speaking plain and to the point which again is not a definition of the truth.

No, honesty is great. I'm a brutally honest person myself and I'm not the kind of person to hold his tongue in any situation. I speak my mind, and if you don't like it, tough.

Yeah it's gotten people mad at me, and it's gotten me in trouble a few times, but I'm not going to stop. I think everyone needs a healthy dose of honesty once in a while. Keeps things balanced.

I'm 'too' honest or so I've been told. Even when it can turn things against my favour I will tell the truth or in extreme circumstances I will remain schtum, Its sometimes hard to practise what you preach but I manage. Better to face reality than to live with a falsehood I say.

there's a Buddhist saying about truth vs tact, god i wish i hadn't lost the play disk of civ4. however i believe that truth is important no matter what, not only that, its fun to tell people the truth, most people aren't accustomed to hearing it.

While I'm normally a very tact person, there are times when that kind of communication doesn't go through and you will just have to go with the old "Listen, I'm going to be very straight up with you." preface and proceed to call them out for any mistakes with tough love. Yes, it might put a strain on a relationship and completely destroy it, but if the personal issues are addressed you'll probably form a stronger bond with that person and the relationship will be moved to a higher level as a result.

The world needs more brutally honest people, dammit.

Hmm... seems I'm still in rant mode after my last post. Oh, whatever, the point stands.
