So, you're a wizard who's just been challenged to a duel by your biggest rival in Wizard academy. You specialize in the four Elements; that is to say Earth, Water, Fire, and Air, but so does your rival.
The official rules of Element duels say that you can only pick two of the elements. Your opponent gets the other two. The duel is over when one wizard is incapacitated.

So Escapists, what two elements would you pick? Remember that your opponent gets the other two.

Also, to make things easier (or harder) Water includes Ice (not cold, just the solid form of water) and Air includes Lightning.
(Like in Guild Wars two)

I choose Earth and Fire, because if I learned anything from Avatar the Last Airbender those are the two elements I would want.

Earth and fire. Simple, an offensive and defensive element, earth to shield myself, fire to damage the opponent. While if they pick water, the offensive side of my strategy will be problematic, but at least I have a good defense.

So its an Avatar duel, but you get two elements (in which case you get lightning with fire).

i would pick water and earth. why? Earth to trap the person, water to stop the blood in their body, kill the wizard as their heart cant pump it. or I can freeze the blood int hem. or I can take all the water out of the body and dry them up.

... hell, with earth alone i can take the stuff thats earthly elements (like carbon) and completely offset and generally fuck up the human body. I can take all your carbon, sulfur, oxygen, nitrogen, and hytdrogen i could and make as much coal as I can right in yur body. (Edit, wiat, i would need air and maybe water for this, buts till, the point stands.)

Both those are the two styles are I'm most comfortable with.

Air and Water.

Mainly to form Ice to freeze/snare them (or shield myself) while attacking with blades of air.

I'd say Air and Earth. For defence, Earth would easily block water and most fire, and I could potentially use Air to deflect or dodge things quickly. For attacking purposes, Earth is good at crushing things, and Air can push the other wizard around (and propel me to be faster, or even fly/levitate).

Also, this means they would have water and I'd have lightning. If they try to use water to attack or defend, I zap 'em good.

The guys who use fire never seem to win. But I'd definatly go for wind and fire to kill by thermobaric explosion.

but including earth would be epic

Water and Earth.

All elements are good for offense, but only these two offer good defense. Earth would protect me from Air's lightning and may block wind, while Water would nullify most Fire spells.

I'd take Water and Earth so I can make the ground around my enemy very muddy.

When is the last time you saw a Wizard wearing practical hiking shoes? Those robes don't look very practical either and would be a bugger to wash.

I'd make his beard so encrusted with mud-nuggets that he couldn't life his head or even close his jaw enough to mutter a spell and his robes would become so saturated with mud that he wouldn't even be able to move his arms to fling a spell in my direction, plus his poor choice of footwear would come to haunt him as he tries to move, only to slip in the mud and fall flat on his arse.

I'd win through sheer annoyance and slapstick magic.

If I wanted to kill my opponent, I'd only need one. Water. For bloodbending.

Considering this is a friendly duel, however, I'd probably use Water and wind. I'd counter earth and fire outright, and would have an advantage against opposing water. The only weakness would be to lightning, but even that can be countered.

Earth and fire.

Meteor showers launched from a nearby volcano that wasnt there yesterday could really ruin your day, wouldnt you agree?

I'd go Water/Earth. Which would allow me to make Swamps and access black magic.
Cast death on opponent. Dead opponents count as 'incapacitated'... Right?

Water and Fire, The boiling mist that would surround it would shield, If my opponant has earth, It's useless, If has wind, his power is funneled into mine.

The best defense is one that destroys your enemies strength.

I choose gun.

Failing that, Earth and Wind. Create fissure in earth. Use wind to push opponent into fissure. Victory.

what if they can use ultra condensed high pressure water beams? then they could probably cut through the earth/rocks/whatever.

Well, then I guess I'm screwed.

Earth and Fire. Combine the two to make a giant flaming ball, just like magicka.

Although now that I think about it, Water and Air might work better. Water to make ice, and combine the ice with lightning for complete awesomeness.

Water and Earth

I would like to think my elements are powerful enough to overwhelm my opponent like his/ her fire cannot evaporate my water and my Earth is heavy and study enough not to be blown away by his/ her wind unless he/she conjure or twister.
Also should we end up duelling with my water against his/her fire I would like to think it could possible end in a stalemate however from the collide elements it would make steam. In this case if we are in a enclose area the room will be full of steam which we would suffocate. If I'm powerful at using my element I may be able to counteract the steam by actually removing the oxygen from the water like a fish (H20) while my opponent give in to the steam.
If neither of these tactic will work than I will pull my trump card by combining my two elements to make mud!
