just curious to see what everyone thinks I predict most will think it's a load of crap much like myself.

FYI: whatever it is, they say it's gonna happen on December 21st of 2012. Ha yeah right.

EDIT: I don't care what happens as long as I get to play Duke Nukem Forever before then

There is absoloutely no way the world will end that soon.
The mayan calender probably was circular, or the Mayans were wiped out too fucking fast in the first place to finish it.
There were many world ending theories before, did it happen? No.
Maybe in the extremely far future, or enough time to pass until the sun screws us over is when the world ends.

Well, I am of the opinion that something will happen, but it is nothing humanity cannot overcome.

(and i am talking like, changing of the magnetic pole's alignment, which has happened in history btw, or maybe the planetary alignment will cause off tides? or a minor earthquake?)

Remember that whole Y2K thing? I recall people in my grade 6 class losing their minds over it, and then it turned out to be a big fail-tastrophe. All the time I knew nothing was going to happen, but my only concern was how I was going to be able to play my N64.

[sub]Wow, the Y2K reference really dated me, didn't it?[/sub]

It is three years since people came up with a crapy conspiracy theory. That is all.

Ask any Mayan or anyone who has studied the Mayans and they will tell you the same thing: The Calender is a bloody calender! Sure it ends on that date but the next day is just the beginning of a new one. You think in the western world, where we use these things to count the years, we would of figured out how a Calender works by now.

For some idiots out there though... Nope! Be proud, your wiser then the end of the day preachers cause you know how to go out and get another massive circle of rock to count down the next few thousand years once this one has used all it's tally marks.

Actually what happens is simple. Thanks to the Abraham religions, particularly Paul based Christianity, many people grow up hearing the story about 'judgment day.' They then try, in usual human self centered-ness, attempt to put a date that will fall somewhere within their life times. Why the hell anyone would want to live through the end of days I don't know... but they damn well wish it will happen in their life times. This is not new, Paul himself did it some 1900 years ago when he preached the second coming.

Oh, by the way Paul, we are still waiting!

Now these people, even those who don't embrace religion, try and make all sorts of theories about why the world is going to end. Be them over the top psudo-science, some thing waaay out of left field like alien invasion or some reoccurring natural destructive event that the Mayans wouldn't of been able to fathom, yet predict, cause the last known one was waaay before we evolved out of the muck. It doesn't matter, now they are all linked to 2012 which will make that a very interesting day as we all turn upside down, inside out and morph into strange matter... at at the same time!

Of course there is a common theme to all these predictions. The vast majority of those people pushing the end of the world stories as fact all believe their purpose here is to 'save us' from it. This is just down right typical of most selfish humans. I mean, what if we don't want to be saved from the end of the world, did they think on that?

Then one of them found out the date 2012 and decided to pin his theory to that date. It, after all, falls in their life times and has some mysterious dead culture predicting it*. Perfect! Adds a nice touch of mysticism to do that, even if your pushing for some psudo-science outcome you can't go wrong with ancient cultures predicting death by Large Hadron Collider! Now another half a dozen unique theories have been pinned to it and in the following years yet another half a dozen more will arise. Though from where I am not sure, aliens have been done, magnetic poles too and anything else I can think of... yes even the Large Hadron Collider has been, somehow, pinned it's evil world ending plans to 2012, quite a feet seeing it is already online!

The sad thing is, lots of people will probably drink some poison flavored cool-aid and for them the world will end. So I guess, to those people, the predictions where correct. For the rest of us we will likely do what the Mayans said to do on this date: PAAARTY!

*On this date the only thing they have predicted is astrological events. So of all the predictions about 2012 at least we know some will happen just as planned... we will get a nice solace just as the Mayans planned for.

Oh and for shits and giggles I was the one who said the world would end in the poll. Hey, now this way if the universe does want to make a fool out of me I win either way.

Edit: ^^^^^Hey. If the Mayan calendar IS correct does that mean their religion is correct too and dying, instead of sending us to heaven, just 'wakes us up'?

I would not mind that afterlife.

I remember Y2K. I think I stayed up and watched fireworks. Thankfully, I was far too young to realize wtf everyone was on about.

As for the apocalypse happening in 2012 - I severely doubt it, because a Republican will most likely get voted in and Republicans will not allow the world to end on their watch when they have so much to prove. I'm also curious as to what timezone 2012 is suppose to work on. PST? EST? Is the apocalypse going to wait until Hawaii catches up with everyone else?

My Spanish teacher says it's just a bunch of phooey and much of the rationalists have said the same. I have yet to receive a reasonable argument from a person who honestly believes the world will end, beyond the fact that the Mayans were able to maybe predict future events.

The theory the IT guys at my school have is that we're going to be invaded by same aliens that made the Maya civilization all but vanish.

The IT guys are awesome.

There's a movie coming out called "2012"

My moneys on it being the worlds largest marketing scheme ever created.

I GARENTEE that after 2012, and nothing happens they will say "Uhh yeah oops lulz we got the day wrong it's actually gonna be 2018.. yeah yeah."

Think about it:

If the Mayans were able to predict anything, wouldn't they still be around?

Solar flare??? Like a magnetic-ish pulse??? Will that stop me playing my games and going on the escapist, cause if it does then I will be uber-pissed.

OT: Well, if the world ends, at least my birthday will happen first (early december b'day for me).

Would it be ironic if the sun was actually trying to kill us and it got deflected and killed the sun, but made some sort of retarded/advanced scientific phenomenon which basically fulfilled all the requirements of the sun (so the earth is fine), but also makes things better for earth??? ... seriously, would that be ironic or just coincidental???

Do you ever think that the people writing the calendar just got bored? Seems the most likely cause to me.

Besides, 2012, if anyone actually bothered to read the prophecy, states that "the world will end as we know it". This only means a great change. Maybe Australia will start allowing Cooking Mama into the country...

Supposedly there are a ton of theories revolving around it and the likely hood of something like that actually happening is the same as it happening on any other day, not to quote the discovery channel or anything. They said the Mayan calender is circular and never truly has a beginning or end and the "end" of the cycle only represents change rather than an ending.

Its more or less just fear-mongering.

The movie doesnt help, it'll only make the fanatics and doomsayers more annoying, if anything.

The world may be slowly dying, but there no damned way we're going THAT fast.
