I thought I might as well make this thread after the Lesnar-Carwin fight a couple days ago.
I think MMA is alright myself, but there used to be a lot of controversy a decade ago, people used to think of it as "human cockfighting". I was just curious about Escapist users feelings on the sport.

I used to hate MMA. I thought it as just a bunch of idiots beating the crap out of each other. Then I read a book called 'The Fighter's Heart' by a guy named Sam Sheridan. That book completely 180'd my view of the sport. After reading it, I slowly tried watching more MMA, starting with the show 'The Ultimate Fighter'. I was hooked.

Now I catch any fight I can.
It's probably the most athletic sport I've ever seen, I've never seen so much respect among fighters in any other sport as full-contact as this one, Dana White alone is the most straight-shooting guy in any popular sport (I love that guy), and I'd love to see MMA and the UFC come to Canada in a more official capacity. UFC 115 was a great start, now let's get more schools, more gyms, more camps, and more sanctioned fights up here.

I like MMA. Being a martial artist myself (Not a particularly good one, but not the worst) I like to see fighting style get more attention. They're great fun, can help you get fit/lose weight and can REALLY help you in a self defence situation (Provided you don't go to a McDojo). MMA shows wider audiences how fun fighting can be.

My only problem is that 'Mixed Martial Arts' now pretty much means 'Muay Thai' or 'Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu'. I'd like to see more variety in the fighting style.

Being a MMA myself (a pretty shit one may I add)... I enjoy it :D. I was introduced to it by a brick shit house named Dean. I was two weeks late to college because I went on holiday. During the first two weeks (that I hadn't attended) He'd asked the class if they'd dare try it. The I came along... met him, became associates. He then asked me... I said "Yeah, sure, Fuck it... Be a laugh"... Pain ensued. Now I've been doing it for 4 years.

So yeah, MMA is my big hobby so I like the sport.

It's OK. Most of the time it is alright. i jsut hate those matches where they only do ground stuff or stand there wrestling each other. It's entertaining but on the whole I think it needs more of an emphasis on striking.

Oh and also, has anyone else noticed that heavyweight fights suck compared to light and welterweight fights? I know it's just an opinion but I find the heavy weight fights kinda boring in general. I guess it's because they are slow and the fighters get tired a lot faster compared the lighter weight divisions.

I find it less entertaining than watching wrestling, so I barely ever watch it.

I only dislike the people who ascertain that MMA's are the greatest martial artists in the world. other than that, its alright, essentially every fight is pankration vs jujitsu or muy tai.

I had a teacher at school tell me that MMA was fake. My friends and I tried to explain to her that she must have been confusing it with wrestling. But she insisted that octagon fighting was fake.

Well that kick to my face felt pretty real to me.

I prefer to watch MMA over boxing or even kickboxing any day.

I've been invited to an MMA school here twice now by students there, I figure I need to get my ass over there and check it out soon.

MMA is one of the few sports I bother to watch. Some people still feel that it's human cockfighting but its actually safer than boxing.

I... can't like MMA.

I just feel that kicks cheapen fighting a lot. If you want to prove your strength, you should do it straight up with no low blows or active usage of the low limbs (of course, using the legs to derive strength is a given). As you can easily tell by now, I'm a large boxing fan.

My brother does MMA and watches UFC all the time. It just turns so gay so quickly, I love the kick boxing part of it (used to box) but when they start to get on the ground it looks like the opening of a porno! (Yes I know their moves and they are designed and do put the opponent in a lot of pain, but it still looks dodgy.)

More like

Greco Roman and Boxing and BJJ vs Kickboxing and Judo. The dudes who fight have to be pretty good at everything, which is kinda why its Mixed Martial Arts. And yeah, there are a handful of styles that most people use because well.. They work in this situation. Actually, most people bill themselves as "Mixed Martial Artists" as opposed to "a Boxer" or "a Wrestler"

So yeah, I'm right into it. I train twice a week (and will be starting dedicated BJJ lessons soon), I watch all the fights I can and generally try to follow the sport. I think its exciting and really entertaining. I'm not one of the douchbags who just wanna see two guys punch each other in the face for 15 minutes (although that is pretty okay as well), I am just as happy to see two guys work the ground for a whole fight. Infact, my favorite fight is Joe Stevenson vs George Sotiropoulos because it was mostly on the ground.

I'm defently against people who claim MMA is "human cockfighting" ..Not that there are many people like that left.. Just saying..

EDIT

It's more an "in"-type of Martial Art. Everyone trains it because it's hipp.
Please explain?

But in all fairness, if you learn MMA, you'll probably be an dangerous opponent towards muggers.
Yep, mixing Wrestling with Kickboxing, then put it in a cage... Legalized abuse. Wrestling isn't, nor is boxing... But put them together and now it's just human cock fighting. Also, how is it a disgrace as a martial art?. They use the basic theory of Jeet Kune Do, learn style, take away what isn't effective and use what you find effective. Styles like this have been going on through the ages. Heck Pancration was pretty similar to this, Bartitsu was the same.

I call a mix of wrestling-boxing pankration. also, I call "BJJ" jujistsu, because it is a school of jujistsu.
my main point is that MMA's are certainly not the "best" (by best people usualy mean the most powerful ie could beat --- in a fight) martial artists in the world, which people tend to argue about.

many martial artists dislike MMA because it is used as a sport more than a lifestyle. it trains fighters, not warriors. there is often less philosophy in it, less inner peace, less control.

I love MMA and actually do it at my gym. I started boxing and got into it from there. Some people thing it is barbaric, but in fact, it is quite a graceful sport if you watch it.

I can't phrase it, but it's something about it that just makes me frown upon it as a disgrace. Which was the closest word I could use to express my opinion about it.
Maybe it's the fanbase?. I've seen many of fans who talk about it, you know, those who have never tried it but are fans of it, they talk about is as if it's a blood sport. Some talk about how there's no grace or technique to it. Rest think it's just "Lad's from down the put scraping".

No, it really isn't. The sport takes a lot of hard work and effort. The ground work does look like a pile of mess to the lamen, however there's a lot going on down there. Your opponent trying to find a gap in your defences so he can use it against you and transition to a dominant position. Trying to find the best submission for that position, trying to think to your self "Would this be too easy for him to counter or pull him self out of" while trying to keep him from turning you. There's a hell of a lot to it. Most of it's reputation for being a blood sport comes from the simple fact that it's held mostly in a cage.
