A lot of members choose not to post in a thread because it's old. Because it has gotten a lot of replies - because their post won't show on the first page.

There are a lot of pros and cons in keeping it as it is or changing it to what I suggest as a possible option. The choice might not be as easy as you first think so maybe you shouldn't vote the first thing you do. Read and consider, write and discuss, please. In case this is taken seriously.

My suggestion:
The opening post (ITT that's this one) sticks at the top of the first page but the replies are pushed down by more recent ones.

e.g.
OP (I made this thread because blah blah blah and blah blah blah so blah blah blah.)

I like it as it is. I don't really see much of a reason to change it.

I believe that contrary to popular belief, the later posts do get read. I've been quoted 5+ pages deep before. You just need to make a good post, and people will still notice it. There are a lot of members that do read entire threads.

I'm perfectly fine with the current set up. The only thing I may change is to always have the OP at the top of every page. That might make it easier to remember exactly what it says.

Constantly shifting pages causes hell for caching, which makes running forums of this magnitude unworkable. It's not a possibility.

What do you mean by "constantly shifting pages"? When would one need to do that?

I don't reply to an old thread because my opinion has usually been said, and a theread of 50 identical opinions is dull

Why not tell everyone in that thread that you agree with them, that you're the 51th person with that opinion and why (if you also have the same reason then tell them you also have the same reason). It'll make a difference, it's not worthless.

EDIT: oh, because it's dull.

Because repetition doesn't drive a point home when it comes to opinion. Simply saying "I agree" gets you a probation, suspension, or ban. Stating the same reasons would be the exact same as what I mentioned. It gives no flavour, no room for discussion.
