Among the posting conventions that drives me nuts is the idea that people will leave a note at the end, basically TLDR, with a one line summary of the text they've been posting. Of course, posting just tldr yourself is a warning-able offense, but even then it's like saying "I came into this topic for some reason, and now instead of bothering to follow through, I'm just going to skip it."

Sure, some topics can be misleading, but for the most part it seems to me that there's no reason for it. It encourages people to be lazy and not even attempt to learn anything, usually resulting in misunderstandings, and it implies that you could have simplified your entire story to a blurb, or in other words, you didn't have that much to say to begin with and your words are all fluff. I mean, I'm sure people don't use it that way on purpose all the time, but it just often feels like it is an unnecessary concept that gets in the way of effective communication and worthwhile discussion.

Have you ever felt like this? Or have you found times when people leaving such a note was actually helpful?

Just some late night ramblings I suppose, but perhaps it's something worth thinking about.

No, but when I'm faced with a wall of text for something I thought was a simple thread I get out of there.
Nice poll!

I think your finger slipped on the post button there buddy. Me? It does kind of make me mad when I either write a big and well thought out post or read someone else's long and well thought out post only for people to either glean entirely the wrong point from the post, or just said TL;DR. Maybe it's not too long and they're just being fucking lazy.

Yeah, I screwed this one up - and now I can't get the poll to update properly.

EDIT: Whoop, it's good!

tldr!

seariously though, since alot of threadtitles are made to grab your attention, but the thread itself is kinda boring, I like to read a summary of the text before reading bigger textwalls
Its just like in the paper, where you can read the bold text first and decide, if you are intrested in the article to read it afterwards. If you only had the titles you had to choose from infos like "WAR HAS BEGUN!" or "LESBIANS!"

It's a generally accepted idea that good expository writing will start with at least a short summary or a descriptive title. Then again, to me, I can usually tell when a title is just meant to be shocking versus someone trying to provoke interest (as long as the thread title isn't a flat-out lie)

As you stated in your original post, some times is a mislead title and thats when I usually use it. Really if its a troll thread and they Display some long wall of text saying how fanboys are stupid or something I usually post TL;DR and something about how troll fail is troll fail. Why? Well because its legal and it usually burns the shit out of trolls.

I don't know that I've ever seen a forum post that wasn't longer than a handful of paragraphs. If that's too long to read, then I don't even know what to say.

The only time I'll neglect to read an OP is if it's a massive WOT without paragraph breaks or proper grammar or syntax. And occasionally I'll pop into a long thread and NOT read all 10 pages of it before commenting. That's about it.

I usually go into a thread looking to not read that much, but sometimes I do the extra effort and read what other people posted and steal that after some modification >.>

TLDR's are usually helpful for me because I get the gist of the wall of text but I usually read a little of it. the first time I read the most of the wall of text it was a troll thread and was basically 3 pages copy and pasted from wikipedia. That was fun >.>

It depends on the topic if I want to read a few paragraphs.

If it's something that interests me then sure, i'll read the lot. As long as the post is well written and remains interesting.

If it's a long post about a subject I have no interest in or isn't well written then i'll move along.
