As people who have seen the front page will have noticed, Eidos is concidering revamping the Tomb Raider series after the poor sales of Underworld.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.83402

Though I'm probley one of the few people in the universe who enjoyed both Legend and the bits of Underworld I have played, there are certain parts of the tomb raider franchise that are still pretty bad. The game is still a constant battle with the camera and combat has never been that good. If I were in control of Tomb Raider I would personally get rid of the current combat ad replace it with a cover and shoot system. Also, there are times when the camera would really benafit from moving back a bit. Yes, we get it, Laras got a nice arse, but I can't see where I'm jumping.

Anyway, whats your personal thoughts on Tomb Raider, has the old girl has it? Has she still got some fire in her? Would you reboot the series, and if so, what would you change?

I think that she still has some games left in her. They main thing that they need to fix though is the camera problems.

The thing about Tomb Raider and similar games is that unless you are a hardcore fan of the series it is difficult to justify a 60 dollar purchase for a game with no multiplayer and limited replayability.

The game itself is excellent, in my opinion, lots of nice locales and puzzles to shoot through and figure out. That still doesn't mean that I would spend a ton of money on it, it means that it is a highly recommended rental or used purchase.

If they fix the camera, controls and game ending bugs of the last one then a revamp can only do good.

Aside from that tomb Raider doesn't need revamping, girls, guns, exotic locations, all present and correct. It's just that the last few games have been made with not enough care and attention to detail (Alright, every game since The Last Revelation).

I just feel they've have enough tries to make a decent game, and it's time to just give up already.

The first few were good but after that there was really no point. However, Legend did breath some life back into the series after Angle of Darkness nearly killed it.

This may be part of the reason I liked Legend so much, I was comparing it to Angel of Darkness, which was terrible. But I still think Lara has a little fight in her, theres just some problems that have plauged the series that have stopped it from being awesome rather than just good.

I agree I own every Tomb Raider and well in everyone the thing that holds it down, is in my opinion, both story and camera.

No offense to Tomb Raider fans, but I dont think Tomb Raider was good even in the past, the camera angle annoyed me, the enemies were hilarious and probably pissed Animal Rights Groups off and its the same game every time the bring out a new one, nothing new, play Uncharted for a better temple exploring game.

Agreed, but I would also add combat to the problems. Replace it with a cover system. And my god, what do Tigers have against Lara?! Its like every fucking games she's ambushed by about 6 of them at once every five minites. Havn't they got something better to do?

If they fix it like you subjest it would be great, and I would support it one hundred percent. Unfortunatly they probably won't, or if they do they'll most likely severly screw up somthing else...

Uncharted's style of gameplay would do great for the series. I know what the hell is up with the lions, tigers and bears? Is she part of the wizard of OZ?

The local fauna is supposed to provide an escalation of enemies. Tomb Raiders enemies usually turn into supernatural beasts of some kind.

I liked most of Underworld's gameplay, technical issues (of which there were enough) aside. The new animations, the scale, the locations. As for changing the combat, combat isn't the point of Tomb Raider; it exists to escalate or relieve tension. The combat on the ships is laughable because it's too much, just as in Legend it was too much. Stealth would serve Lara better in such circumstances than a cover system.

Either would be a welcome change, rather than the current shoot and pray cluster fucks.

True. I thought having Lara grapple down into an alley full of mercs armed with automatic weapons and grenades made her look stupid. Sheesh, can't you just go around the back way to the bike?

The votes on this thread isn't looking to well for Laura :X

I just feel that the climbing, running, jumping and shooting at animals just can't take the franchaise very far. (it never has)

TR will always be a mediocre franchaise for gamers sadly.

Personally I never liked Tomb raider from the beginning but understood why some people liked it. But when I saw the ad for underworld I knew it was going to be terrible

Problem is Tomb Raider is from the old Playstation one era when console games were 'cool' and a hot brunette solving puzzles in exotic places was enough back then.

Console gaming is now primarily an FPS geekfest and as such she doesn't belong anymore, this is obvious when most peoples complaints are about the combat, that never felt like the main part of the game to me. It was all about the puzzles and thats where the series should still concentrate but nobody wants that. Plus a cover system would just be lame and turn it into a generic shooter.

Is it too much to ask for great puzzles AND a decent combat system?
