http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/13/rumor-natal-part-of-new-xbox-console-due-fall-2010/

Apparently, Microsoft is considering releasing Natal not only as an add-on to the Xbox 360, but as a part of a new system entirely. This might only be a rumor for now, but if this does come to fruition, isn't it a little too soon for Microsoft to be releasing a new console? Especially considering that "the next console cycle won't take place until 2015"?
Maybe I'm not clear on how Microsoft plans on releasing their motion capturing baby, but I think they're aiming a bit too high with this one.

Thoughts?

Considering Microsoft still haven't managed to make sure their current console doesn't keep fucking itself up I hardly think they're in any state to release a new one so soon.

I will storm the MS Hq and shoot Bill Gates in the head if they release a new console in 2010.
Considering Bill Gates hasn't worked there for quite a while, I doubt that immensely.

The tech that Natal will require to work as it did in the showcase is another 3-4 years off anyway. It won't come out until they've got the motion detection properly polished.

wasn't 360 from 2005 so its not that strange, the xbox only lasted 4 years otherwise no new xboxs next year it will just be a 360+natal bundle

If you look at Nintendo, they've happily been releasing new versions of the DS left, right and centre, and no-one seems to mind about that. The comments on the first thread on the PSP Go complained at most about how it looked uncomfortable. For some reason, the Natal has attracted more complaint than other new console releases.

Also, we must all remember that this is just a rumor.

I agree with you there. There is really no need for a new console (especially one rumored to be supported by a gimmick.) Games can get much better if the developers would just stick to a set hardware system. Just think how much better later console releases were compared to earlier games.

This thread has been done before.

j/k, it's a hard topic to search for. In another article apparently it's not going to be a huge jump of a console, it's just going to be an upgraded version of the 360 with motion control at the helm. I guess you could look at it as the DSi version of the DS.

I rather DOUBT microsoft is going to be bringing out a new xbox in 2010. Maybe a fancy upgraded one, but not the xbox 3600

This cycle will last until around 2011 or maybe 2012.

End-of-the-cycle sony will be on top re: hardware (though, PC will have significantly more potential by that time). In order to diffuse this, microsoft must use its current marketshare, userbase, and cash flow to stay ahead of sony in the development cycle. An xbox 3600 could potentially trump sony's strategy of building the machine of the future-- microsoft instead built and priced the machine of today for today, and will bring the machine of tomorrow out tomorrow. Sony's response would most likely be to price the next playstation lower... while being less aggressive on the hardware side.

As sony continues to be the weak performer in this console market, this hampers their ability to sign exclusives for their system, much as nintendo was bullied out of the market before depantsing the industry with 2:1 sales.

Nintendo, however, will release a machine that rivals today's xbox 360 and ps3 at a much lower pricepoint, while the other two continue this mad dash to see who can ram the most hardware into their machine. Now that nintendo has signed some of the bigger names in the industry to prepare games for them, we might actually see some software worth buying again. Of course, the names are EA and activision, which seem to be most interested in getting some of that sweet sweet peggle money.

I think that they'll wait until the economy imporves to release another console because thats smart business practice.

Exactly, precisely. In terms of real potential the current consoles are only just starting to take off. Besides, I really doubt they could actually use Natal much. And I mean genuinely, sensibly use it, not just for pointless gimmicks like the DS is occasionally guilty of.

Without trying to insult anybody, I think it has to do with the majority of 360 owners being... anti-casual gamers.

I don't know why Microsoft would want to release a new system any time soon, when they're doing quite well under the status quo. Consoles tend to go "next gen" when either (1) a company wants to shake things up because it doesn't have a very good market share in the current generation of systems (e.g. Sega Dreamcast, Xbox 360) or (2) a company anticipates that another company is trying to shake things up, and it wants to beat that other company to the punch.

I doubt that Microsoft will come out with a new system until the 360 starts to lose its market share or Sony starts thinking about the PS4. I don't see either of those things happening soon.

No, consoles go next gen when they cannot catch up with PC graphics any more.

But if you consider the fact that this technology is still in it's infancy, don't you think they should work on it a little longer instead of releasing it with the console as soon as next year?

But as tharwin said, it is just a rumor so far.

not really its a closed market new consoles appear once the market has become saturated and the new machine will sell based on the love for the current one.
Otherwise they have all been out of date since the 8800GTX or november 2006 the 360 for example isn't close to playing Oblivion at 2560x1600

Even when the PC gaming market was relatively strong, it did not represent a significant threat to the console market. Today, PC gaming represents an even smaller niche of the gaming public; and many of these people are likely to prefer PCs irrespective of console graphic quality. And of course, the most popular PC game in the world right now doesn't exactly represent a graphical threat to the modern consoles. I sincerely doubt that concerns about PC graphics weigh heavily on the concerns of console manufacturers.

EDIT: Why is Bill Gates no longer working for MS, considering that he....well you know.....sort of OWNS IT!
MS is owned by shareholders. Gates owns a substantial number of those shares, but shareholders have little to do with the day to day running of a corporation. He's also the Chairman of their Board of Directors, but board members also have little to do with directly running the company. Today, he is really just the "face" of Microsoft. Other people run it.
