Colton Walker's top 5 video game characters

Before I begin I want to define a great character. A character has to have 3 things to be considered great.
One, he/she must have some sort of personality that defines themselves as an individual. They must not have a personality that is so overused that no one can actually believe it anymore. This basically rules out any silent protagonists due to the fact that silent protagonists do not have any personality whatsoever. So I apologize for whoever wanted link or Gordon freedman on the list.
Two, The characters personality must not make us want to murder them. I have seen way too many characters with a genuine personality that is just annoying. Take tidus from final fantasy x as an example. Tidus is thrust into an incredible world of wonderment and all he can do is complain, whine, and he never stops being angsty.
Three, The character must be lovable. This may seem like the same thing as rule #2 but hear me out. Ive seen many characters who ive been able to tolerate but never had any genuine connection with. A good example of this is every almost character from call of duty. Sure im able to cope with their ridiculous holy wood style war banter but I have never felt any connection to any of them. I care about them so little that I cant even tell you any of their names after beating all 3 modern warefare's.

So now that the ground rules are layed out we can continue with what you all came to see. My top 5 video game characters ever.

5. Samus Aran- Metroid series (not including other M)

Samus makes this list because she is one of the video game industries only examples of a strong willed female character. She happens to be in the select few female protagonists that arent overly sexualized. If you look at other female protagonists you will see what im talking about (Laura Croft, Ayumi from x blades, Ivy- soul calibur)

Most players had no idea samus was a woman until the very end of the first game. It really showed players that females can be a strong lead character without being the object of fetishistic properties.

Samus remained the staple of video game women until her appearance in metroid other m, when team ninja decided that it would be best to give her a personality of a wet carrot and make the camera pan to her backside. Never the less Samus maintains her position on this chart at a solid 5th place

4. James Sunderland- Silent Hill 2

For those who have played silent hill two you will understand what I'm talking about, and for those who havent played it, go play it now you really don?t know what your missing. Getting on to the point though James is one of the more interesting characters I' ve ever come across. During the course of silent hill 2 James delves into the darkest parts of himself and really lets the player see what type of twisted person hides beneath his rather gentile exterior.

Every part of this game tries to help you understand what type of person James is. Even the monsters are repressed parts of his own psyche manifested in horrendous creatures, which helps us better understand james.

While James might be interesting that definitely doesn?t mean he isn?t stupid. James might be the dumbest character I have ever had the pleasure to play as. After being assaulted by the most hideous creatures imaginable James downright refuses to leave the town. It's almost as if James would be willing to loose his life in the process to potentially see his already dead wife. Dont take this the wrong way though James still made the list for being an incredibly deep character by any standards.

3. Solid Snake- metal gear solid series

Solid Snake is the the definition of badass. Snake has everything going for him, Grizzled veteran look, Stealth skills, excellent combat skill, and the ability to be loved by every player to play metal gear solid.

What I think the best part of snake is though, is his absolute love for his country. Snake is slowly deteriorating due to some ridiculous plot point but he still tries to fight as best he can to protect America. This turns snake into one of the most proud and loyal characters ever to be programed into a game, and also lands him a spot on this list.

2. GLaDOS- Portal series

Glados is the first villain of the list and boy does she earn her spot. GlaDOS is one of the only likable villains ever, EVER. She may be a soul less robot but she comes across as a real human being, albeit a very snide and creative one.

GlaDOS has one job and that is to test you, which she carries out passionately. She does however like to mix work with fun because with every chamber she has some of the darkest and most humorous lines to ever be uttered by a game character. This is what makes GlaDOS great. She is a horrendously evil character but she is impossible to hate because she is just so darn funny. I have never laughed so hard at a game in my life thanks to GlaDOS. She easily cemented a spot for herself on this list and not only because she is able to sing some very catchy tunes.

1. Wander- Shadow of the colossus.

While I do love this game I dont easily give away my top spot, Wander earned all the credit he deserves.

Wander is the main protagonist of Shadow of the Colossus, not that anyone would know because his name is never mentioned until the end credits when most people turn the system off. I went through the entire game not knowing my characters name but I still loved him, that is the mark of a great character.

If snake is the embodiment of a warrior then Wander is the embodiment of a hero. He basically travels to the ends of the earth and fights the largest monsters ever to walk all to try and return his girlfriend or wife back from the dead. Wander also has to practically sell his soul to the devil to even have the chance to put himself through all this misery. Now that is some commitment right there.

Wander may never speak a full line of dialogue in the game but the player manages to connect with his goals, Which speaks for itself as to why I put Wander as my best character ever.

Interesting piece, but no, I disagree with pretty much all of them.
See the problem with this is that it is SO opinion based...I'll be very surprised if anyone 100% agrees with you.
I don't really agree with your reasoning too.

...especially for number 1.
Him? As the best character ever? No I'm sorry that's wrong xD.
Is he a hero? Yes he fights and kills these creatures (not monsters), but what did they do to deserve to die?
That's the subtext of the game that makes it so much more...meaningful, in my opinion.
Nah, he isn't the best character in a videogame at all.
Just think a minute...the best?
I think your love for the game itself has indeed clouded your judgement.

BUT it's your opinion! So it's fine! Sorry if I've come across as a bit of a douche haha.
Hmm...my top 5...
In no particular order!

Daxter (Of Jak and Daxter)
Ezio (of Assassin's Creed)
Captain Quark (Of Ratchet and Clank)
Auron! (Of Final Fantasy X)
And yeah, Glados too.

Interesting idea for a piece though...although I'm not sure it really counts as a review HMM.

EDIT:
Also, in your opening lines you state:
'One, he/she must have some sort of personality that defines themselves as an individual. They must not have a personality that is so overused that no one can actually believe it anymore. This basically rules out any silent protagonists due to the fact that silent protagonists do not have any personality whatsoever.'
So you instantly rule out Samos, who you said has the personality of a 'wet carrot', and also rules out your number one choice because he is, indeed, a silent protagonist.
Contradictions, man:/.

Just a quick note. Wet carrot thingy was written by Sakamoto from Nintendo who also picked the voice actor for Samus, not Team Ninja who handled the gameplay parts.

I didnt really consider Wander to be a silent protagonist. For me a silent protagonist is someone who the audience can place their own personality upon. I never felt that way while playing Shadow of the colossus but that just might be me.

Also i believe i said that samus had the wet carrot personality during the newest game other m,

Thanks for the feedback though, I was just trying to improve my writing so i wrote this and decided that it may fit on this forum

I just cannot get passed wander being on the list. I think your assessment of him is wrong. He isn't supposed to be a hero. He has an obsession and cannot learn to let go and that obsession drives him to kill beautiful innocent creatures.

I may have portrayed him wrong as being the hero but what you said just reinforces the fact that he is an amazingly deep character. I dont know many other characters who push themselves that far just to try and relive the past.
