Possibly illegal thread - maybe.

Opinion based thread that can be great information - YES!

Anyway, do you torrent stuff or use a program such as DC++ or LimeWire?
And why do you choose to use it/ think it's a good/bad idea?

I think Torrents are a great idea. Even if you do torrent something such as a game, you could just be doing it to test it out before actually buying it. And if you torrent/DC++ music, then you get your music for free, and it doesn't matter if it's "supporting the artist" because - hey, someone payed for it, right?

actually, whenever you download "illegally" as some put it, you don't actually steal from the artist. on each album, the band only gets a really small percentage, if any, depending on the publisher/record company.

PS TORRENTING ROCKS!

I like torrents, but the downside is low seeders or a bad seed to peer ratio. I realize that this is about PIRACY more than it is TORRENTS themselves, but w/e. I beleive that torrents are a great tool for file sharing, be it legal or illegal, because it can allow for much higher speeds on larger downloads.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that too. And because it's the same as letting a friend "borrow" the "CD" for a while.
But yes, torrents are great ways for file sharing.

I do, but only movies. And then I typically buy them anyways. An example is Dollhouse. It's not out on DVD yet, but the day it is I'm buying it and freeing up some hard drive space.

It is something that I would support because many DVDs on my shelf I torrented it and then went out and bought it because I had enjoyed it. The deal of an emulation I been for since there is some games on the DS I have sampled and enjoyed. When I can afford a DS I am buying it and the games I have enjoyed on the emulation. The deal of torrents does offer for as many bad as well as good things. It is something that will help the little guys more often then not while hurting the big guys. This being independent films since most don't have a big distributor. So watching the thing for free will lead a lot of times to purchasing the item. The reason it is looked down upon is it is something to preview a said movie or game. The problem is people don't purchase the item because they have previewed it and did not like it enough to purchase a physical copy of it. That alone is what hurts the big guys and helps the little guys. I may be wrong, it happens when you happen to be an idiot.

If I had to pay 80 bucks for a game, or torrent it, I would buy it. I prefer to get my game legally, instead of failing to get it illegaly.

I now apparently have to be the person to point out that not all torrents are illegal. Most of my music is from a bunch of local DJs, producers or other unknowns and they all distribute their own music for free and legally via torrents since it saves them bandwidth from their websites.

I tried torrents once, to this day I hate torrents for not letting me download my Kirby Anime.

Yes.
Not all torrents are illegal.

And if I want a game that I can't find at Gamestop, Target, or Best Buy, I'm not going to track it down over eBay.
I'll torrent it.

Yes. Torrenting demos and video patches are always faster than downloading them from the official server, and it's WAY faster than filefront. And you can resume downloading later if the connection is interrupted.

IMO, more game companies should release large-size free content on torrents. It would definitely save on server costs.

I use torrents: for legal uses. They sometimes download faster than the normal download.

Other than that, though, no. I don't trust torrents, I can't be sure what I'm getting is safe (and I like supporting the developer/artist and have the money to)
