In the Total War series do you prefer the more ancient - Medieval period, or the more recent past 400 years period?

Ancient Medieval Includes:
Shogun
Medieval
Rome
Medieval II

Recent History Includes:
Empire
Napoleon

I personally prefer the more ancient ones like Rome and Medieval, because the games were a whole lot funner and strategic... In my opinion.

To me, there's nothing better than French heavy cavalry storming English massed archers or Roman legions holding the line against barbarian hordes. The older ones are the best.

Do you think? I didn't like the new ones really, mainly because I'm really bad at them!

TEMPLAR SMASH! is my strategy so ancient though it isn't that ancient 900 years is not that long ago considering the earth HAS BEEN PROVEN to be around for over 6 billion years

Doesn't matter since I won't buy it. CA lost all my respect after ripping me off with empire and trying to do the same with napoleon.

Empire is the game that taught me to always pirate before I buy since official demos are completely unrepresentative of the quality of the other 98% of the product.

Seeing as how my puny computer can't run Empire with the settings on low, but runs Rome at a decent speed, I'll go with ancient.

I've had some good times with Rome, like 3 armies of low level infantry vs. one unit of Spartans. And I still have yet to beat the campaign.

While the ancient ones are great. I do prefer Empire/Napoleon. Mainly because they let me command Redcoats and the Royal Navy.

I still play Rome and Medieval 2, seeing as I've beaten them both...

Ever tried three units of dogs versus a peasant army?

That was a fun game!

Ancient/medieval, since it allows for more epic battles with massed cavalry charges, and the limitations on gunpowder makes it more balanced.

Here's how it played out for me, mind you, this was on a bridge.

The peasants tried to charge across the bridge, my dogs met them halfway and the peasants were slaughtered until the routed, I had one dog left by the end of it though...

First time i've heard of someone else even playing Shogun! Best thing was the shinobis, i'd make a metric fuckload of them and send them to one enemy region. Rebellion would ensue and drain that enemy of resources so i could strike without fail.

My favourite one was medieval 2 though, and its expansions. God they are addictive.

Thats sounds cool, I'll have to go try it.

Yeah, I'd much rather charge three hundred Knights Templar into a battalion of Billmen than watch a bunch of musketeers hide behind a log and take potshots at some other guys a mile away. Empire and Napoleon didn't have the same feel as the rest of the series; they weren't dramatic enough.

Ancient, TW is not build for Napoleonic or any more modern warfare, but with older one can cope.

I'd like them to do a dark ages total war. Medieval felt too 13th century for my taste, give me a solid 8th century clusterfuck of barbarians and raiders from all sides and I'll be a happy camper.

I always had fun with Legendary Geisha snuffing out enemy generals and daimyos. Theres always something weirdly satisfying about mass assassination as primary tactic.

Empire was a joke, released just so they could test their new software. And it failed.

They then fixed the bugs, for the most part and released Napoleon.

There's nothing satisfying about watching two lines of riflemen take plinking pot shots at each other.

The older games were intense, I love my berserkers.
