I've played the full version of Rome:Total War only even though I've played the demo version of a couple of others.I really enjoyed playing the game and it got me hooked for a few weeks...

What is your favorite Total war game?

I have to say Empire I have always wanted to play a strategy game from the 1700's so it was absolutely perfect for me. I loved rome but was not wholly impressed with medieval 2. I never played one from earlier on though.

There's also a new mod released for Medieval 2 total war based on the LOTR franchise.I think that one's good too.

Empire is my favorite one and I'm sticking to it (probably because of the naval combat), despite how much I loved Rome. Medieval was basically "Rome 2 with slight upgrades, thus, making it really dissapointing and just as buggy and incredibly broken".

Empire has finally added some much needed changes, and since the game is still extremely moddable, we can still get our swords and shields if we want :D - I know I look forward to that. Also, Maratha has elephants, so it's still a total war game - har har. CA is cracking down on the patches too and these "much needed huge patches" are coming out sooner, and quicker.

Though the reason I hold Rome equally high, is because it's stood through the test of time, and now has all these amazing mods for it that can make it even better than Empire. Look at the "Napoleanic total war" mod for example. It pretty much doesn't "age" now.

Also, try Darthmod for Empire total war, it gets rid of the whole "units standing still looking at each other, awkward moment before the bayonet stab" thing, increases unit sizes (but not to the point of unbearable for your system), gives much needed changes to naval combat, and improves all the AI.

I enjoyed Shogun the most, the that's going to get my vote. I'm very interested in Empire though. I may grab it once there's a price drop.

How is the LAN-ability? Also, any way to have designated teams? For example, my dad and I versus X?

Rome for me. But never vanilla. Bring on the mods so the game is actually enjoyable.

After that I'll go with the first Medieval game. That was pretty awesome and in some ways better than Rome. M2TW on the other hand was rather crappy due to lack of imagination, bugs and a vanilla feel. I still haven't been able to find the right mod so the game becomes good.
Shogun was a great game as well.

Empire I haven't really tried, but I guess the premise is interesting. I suppose I'll get it eventually.

Rome. I haven't played Empire though. I decided I wouldn't buy another TW game until they made an AI that wasn't complete crap, and going by reviews it appears they've yet to do that.

I loved Shogun at the time, for being revolutionary in its gameplay, and unique in its setting. But my favourite must be Medieval 2. Man I love cavalry. I usually played a Muslim faction, so the pope could hide in his burrow without annoying me. I would crush the Western world with my legions of Horse Archers and Heavy Cavalry. Nothing stood in my way.

Well the Mongols and Timurids were slightly annoying for invading me in my back, but I was prepared for them, and it would be glorious.

I going with Medieval 2: I've only played the Empire demo, so I don't have enough substance to pass judgment upon it. I've played every game in the series - save for some of the expansions - and each had things I liked about them. But Medieval 2, despite some of its flaws, was the most fun for me.

I voted Rome. I've enjoyed playing Empire for a bit, but it really needs some more patches or the modding tools to get it going

I've played Medieval and Rome. Medieval has a better strategy map and Rome has better battles. I'm more of a strategy guy, so I like Medieval more.

Well, I've only ever played Medieval II so my opinion is kinda biased.
That being said I really want to play Empire, but I'm afraid my weedy computer couldn't handle the awesomeness.

Edit: 1000 posts!

See, that always bugged me a lot, even on the easier difficulties I couldn't stop the Mongols, which made the Egyptians and Turks ( two of the best factions in the game) virtually unplayable.

I finished the campaign on very hard/very hard with both the Egyptians and the Turks. It certainly isn't easy, but if you know what and more importantly when they are coming for you it's do-able. You'll have plenty of money once you control your part of the Mediterranean. I always prepare a few spies, and a couple of assassin's (this is truly essential, they have insanely good general's, if you can wipe a least one it may already be worth it). And I ensure I have about four full stacked army's with the best general's in my country, and some fortresses in the neighbourhood so I can replenish my losses, with a number of garrisoned cavalry so I can have the strongest possible armies at all time.

Once they arrive, it is a matter of waiting till they come to Anitoch, assassinating as many generals as possible on their way, and then with mobile armies (I only build cavalry units) trying to pick off their isolated units, hopefully with a 2:1 advantage, but if needed on an equal basis. Hard battles will ensue, losses will be great, and nearly all of the enemy will fight to the death. Once you have annihilated them though, there's no doubt in the world that you are the supreme ruler of the world.

*Glory to the Islam, INSHA'ALLAH!!!*
*cough*

Edit: come to think of it, have you ever played as the Moors? They are quite powerful too, and they have Camel Gunners eventually. They're starting position is a bit meagre though, but you are reasonably safe from outside threats.
