Poll: Toughest Sport

Hockey or Rugby.

Hockey takes so much coordination and physical endurance. Balance is also a big point. 82 games a season of this I might add. No offense Football fans but your sports players he only have to play 16-20 games a season As physical as football is, Hockey is just as much, if not more so and the play is sustained for longer periods of time. Goaltending is possible one of the hardest positions to play in all of sports. You have fractions of seconds to decide what your going to do to stop that round piece of rubber before it reaches you. A slight error or hesitation and that puck is behind you. Some goalies see upwards of 30 shots a night, and it isn't unheard of in this day and age for a goalie to face 40+ on a regular enough basis. Goalies must be quick, agile, and strong. They wear 40 pounds or so of equipment which limits movement, and must stay on the ice for most of, if not the entire, game. There's just no comparison to me.

Add to this the speed of a shot should it not be redirected (which is another matter altogther). At the recent all star skills competition, the hardest shot was clocked at over 105 mph. Even with the padding a goaltender wears, that's still pretty scary.

I rmemeber someone made the joke that they should put some fan that wins a contest, or some college kids who really want to do it or something like that in the net to stand in front of the shot, and i could only think of two things:
1) thats horribly inhumane
2) That is awesome, where can I sign up? XD

I've played both sports, and it's hockey that's tougher by far.
In pretty much every perceivable way.
It's faster, far more dangerous, more difficult, more tiring, etc.
You even get a much stricter and more varied training schedule with hockey.
I'd like to see a wrestler outrun a hockey player.
Especially the goalie, because the goalie is likely to be the guy that's in the best shape in the team.
Because he gets to do all the same ice exercises as the other players, only with 10 times more weight in armour.
Jesus fucking Christ, that was horrible...

Try standing semi-crouched with your knees in a 90 degree angle for 30 seconds.
Imagine doing that for over an hour.
Now you know why the goalie runs fast.

I am. I was in it for Lemiuex at first (i'm sure I butchered that name). besides, my favorite player is Orpik. I was born near Pittsburgh, so I'm a Pittsburgh fan (mostly). I've been into hockey since... oh... since I was eight or so. And I'm 18 now.

And yeah, too bad abut that. Though OVi is havinga sucky season, proving that Ovi talkers need a helping of shut the hell up

Good. I got into the Pens around '97 or so I think it was. Jaromir Jagr was, and still is, my favorite player, I've just kept my Penguin pride. My parents hate it, because we're Cleveland fans. So they see gold and black and immediately think Steelers.

The Penguins had their dark period. I give you (grudingly) respect for sticking with your team through the thick and thin. I'm Columbus fan myself and believe me, I know how hard it can be to watch your team some nights...

Oh man, I feel for you. I have a hard time watching the Jackets. I don't like watching my team lose...

The worst part is that they've shown how good they CAN be. But when they really need to pull those W's together they just disappear. It's a miracle Rick Nash hasn't just decided to take his talents elsewhere. You watch him play at the international level or in the All Star Game and you see how good a player he is. Just a waste in Columbus sadly.

But it could be worse. We could be The Islanders right now. *shudders*

I'm just saying is all. If you want to include it, you can. But if I put up boxing, it would be the most one sided poll ever. So I excluded them, for both sake of arguments and type of sport, as well as to keep the poll somewhat even, or attempt to.

Though I've seen wrestling (real) before, and the staph infections arent worth it (joke being made, lets see who can take it).

Also, to paraphrase a bunch of posters on the escapist about body protection *ahem* WAHH!! PLAY REAL SPORT LIKE RUGBY PUSSY HURR HURR HURR.

So yeah, that "armour" appaerantly makes you weak, for whatever reason I'll never understand, so to say that armour is something that makes another sport damaging is somewhat... Off. Not against you, just kinda an aside.

Skateboarding.

When it comes down to it, you're controlling a single piece of plywood with wheels, and doing stunts with it that take hundreds of hours of practice to even try to attempt and get right.

I don't know of any other sport that requires more hours of practice to master, or that allows it to easily be a hobby and a sport at the same time.

Probably cause he gets a damn good contract in Columbus, and they're in the "rebuilding/training" process. And the Islands are turning it around. Welll... were. What with Depiatro getting knocked out for a few weeks after Brett Johnson floored him with one ungloved punch (which was cool, just cause its a goalie fight and it taught you to take shit seriously).

No, I say its worse to be the Oilers. They cant seem to do anything with all the draft picks they get. And that Hall kid really isnt that great for the hype.

This thread is flawed from the get go. Most of the responses and opinions are from people who probably never had any experience with any sports, let alone the majority of them mentioned.

Hockey/rugby/Football are pretty interchangeable. You can make a case for either one.

Since im an american and a former QB i will show my bias and vote Football. The toughest sport of all time.

Well... it is about Personal opinion and based on people's thoughts now, whether they play or not, and the more unified effort has been for boxing/MMA/wrestling. imagine how flawed it would be then.

Besides... look the other options there's been. Skateboard, Chess, Fencing (done that too, the only reason I say Hockey is I've had worse injuries and seen worse injuries in modern history on larger scale through hockey). So its nice to get that variation and have people think outside the box.

I'd have to say the toughest (in terms of being physically demanding) would be AFL. Seriously, that's one sport where you just run, the whole time, non-stop. In terms of fitness, players have four quarters that can last for (usually) up to 30 minutes. Not only running, they also have to tackle, jump and kick distances of over 50 metres with pin-point accuracy. that's tough!
