Personally, I think the training should blend seamlessly with the first level, so it's not technically a tutorial, it just has someone reminding you of the basics.

Portal did this. Almost all the testchambers were training exercises, but I can't say that they felt like tutorials.

CoD is always good in that its tutorials are so short. Even though it's not my favourite game, CoD5 kind of threw you into the action in a way that worked pretty well.

There are some semi-fun training levels, like the one in Mirror's Edge. The training itself isn't great, but the fact that you can hang around and do whatever you want is pretty neat. And it has a skip option.

Some are good, some are quite annoying, like the Fallout 3 and Oblivion ones, they just drag on for far too long.
Oblivions yes, but Fallouts has alot to do so for the first 3 or 4 times its fun. But yeah, after that it gets to a drag.

Then at the end it asks you if you want to change anything.

So just save right before there. and you are good.

Always put in a tutorial, and give players the option to skip it. I liked the tutorial lap in Grid. Put the player in a car and instruct them to finish the race, short, sweet, and explains all of the relevant features.

I needed the training levels for Assassins Creed, eventually i got used to them. But i would like the option to skip training levels though.

The Champions Online starting area is good the first few times, but then it gets annoying. But you need it to get the first 6 levels.

Online games need them if only so they have some where to learn the basic controls so they don't have any reason during a ranked round with strangers wondering how to shot the cannons or where to go.

Training levels ought to be optional, especially if you've already completed them once. I'm grateful that they exist though, some games have strange controls. Oh, and the COD4 take on the entire training thing was pretty neat.

Occasionally there are good training levels.
For example, the tutorial in Runes of Magic, Every time I make a new char I always run through it. It's like an acid trip.

I'd like an option to skip training. At least ODST understands this need
Just what I was about to say, so far its really only ODST that gets this need for skipping of the damned training. Well, there ARE a couple of others but I can't be bothered to go into details.

I'd like an option to skip, only for repeat playthroughs. When I play a game, I always play the game to the fullest the first time, do every training mission, watch every cutscene, etc. But if I'm replaying it, I like to skip the training since I should probably have mastered the controls by the end of the game
Well said. I agree and do the same thing, the OPTION to avoid them is always welcome. At least that way you get a choice instead of being forced through levels that can feel quite mundane the 2nd time through.

If i've never played the game, or a game in the series, then yeah, I may feel inclined to try it out.
One thing that does annoy me about the perfect command and conquer series on the xbox, is that to get achievements you have to do the tutorial, even though I know it all. This was made worse in Commanders challenge, where I had to redo the exact same training as I did in Red Alert 3. Not impressed.

I agree with the option to have a skip button, now if it's a sequel i think it's a horrible idea to have a tutorial. Unless the 1 new gimmick you add really needs that big of a description for it

Splinter cell had one in the first game and I liked it because the controls are so complex. And so did Star Wars Bounty Hunter, one of my favorite games. Both were necessary, but if the game is going to be generic you might as well make it short or NON-EXISTENT

I don't mind the easy starting levels with occassional tips on how to perform actions popping up. But I hate having to perform specfic actions to clear a lesson EVERY time I try to play the first level again.

Gears of War did tutorials quite well I thought with the "warm up or straight into the fray?" choice

Bounty Hunter had complex controls? I thought it was just like d-pad weapon select, X jump, sqaure shoot and lock on and jetpack button and you were like set?

I haven't played it in years so I'm not too sure on that though

Not talking about the conversations. Talking about the annoying FMV's that are unskippable. The first most obvious one that comes to mind is the opening cutscene.

And that is how I started playing oblivion/fallout too. Save at end of tutorial just before (yahtzee) "Hold on is there any part of your life that you wish to change" (/yahtzee. At least I think that's the quote...)
I forgot about the opening movie. Honestly though, it's only 3 minutes, so I don't mind. And almost everything else can be skipped through, which makes it better in my book. But glad we agree on Oblivion/Fallout!
