I was thinking about this earlier today, and, given my cynicism and misanthropy towards the human race, was about to doom all meaningful work done by public figures to the realms of my "phony" group. However, then I began thinking. There are people who actually seem to mean it!

Now, I'm mostly going to mention musical figures, given that I'm never found without headphones or some sort of instrument with me.

Anyway, looking at bands like Minor Threat, Rise Against, Protest the Hero, and U2, one gets the feeling that they're actually trying to make a difference. Minor Threat encouraged straight edge before the media gave it negative neo-anarchistic connotations, and Rise Against actively supports PETA while playing a genre of music that is all about viscerally embracing primal instincts. Protest the Hero write entire songs about respecting women, and they're barely in their 20's playing progressive metalcore. Bono has met with national figures to discuss charities and giving to the needy.

They seem to be genuine. However, when I told a good friend of mine my theory, he argued that they're just out to get attention; I can certainly see this being true ("Angelina Jolie adopted how many orphans?"), because being outspoken about something that nobody else is speaking about gets you the most notoriety and fame, not counting committing a grievous crime. Also, some don't necessarily support a positive cause; there are plenty of Aryan supremacist theories and Satanic things proposed, which'll have the same, if not greater, effect. Anywho, I was wondering what you guys think.

The figures don't have to be bands; this applies to pretty much everyone who has a spotlight on them. Of course, poll included for the trigger-happy.

Paris Hilton saying no to fur, however, is utter trollop.
Yeah, for some reason I just don't see someone like her actually having thoughts of her own on anything other than fashion.

Hmm, some are valid, some aren't. Angelina Jolie has been for a long time a well known humanitarian; she isn't just saying "look at me, im nice, i adopt kids", she actually has gone into the field on numerous occasions and has donated a lot of money, which is much more than most people have done for certain causes. I personally don't like her at all, yet i commend her for actually going and helping people rather than just throwing money at people.

Paris Hilton on the other hand... if the new fashion item was fur im sure she would wear it
