I've been looking around on Steam all day, and using the last bit of Christmas money I've got left, I'm planning on getting a strategy/micro-management style game, and my decision has come down to either Civilization 4: Complete (has the original games and the expansions) or Tropico 3(the Steam edition which comes with extra maps and little trinkets for the game). Both are relatively the same price, and I can't decide on which to go for.

What do you think, Escapists?

I would prefer Civilization 4, but I've never played Tropico 3.. or 2 or 1.

Well really it depends on what type of civ building game you want to play. From my experience Civilization is more about handling external issues with your country (such as dealing with other nations, making 18th century Europe style alliances, and going to war) while Tropico is more about dealing with your countries internal politics (how much money to take from your banana republic to put into your Swiss bank account, delivering edicts that different groups of people in your banana republic react to differently, and choosing whether or not to rig the next election).

Overall I feel playing as El Presidente is just more enjoyable than Genghis Khan.

I am a civ4 addict. But, i know when I play 48 hours is going into it. :) I haven't played Tropico, may need to check it out. But civ isn't so much a resource game as it's a bit war strategy (what to build, when) and when to make nice or not. AI is better than 1-3 and I am looking forward to 5.

They're clearly different games. If you want a more massive experience, go with Civ 4. If you like the micromanaging then go with Tropico. Personally I think Civ is better because it has more replay value. I found with Tropico it was the same basic idea repeated over and over, and got boring quickly.

depends. civ 4 is more broad and bigger but little customization or micromanagement. tropico 3 however is more of a microcosm but gives you complete reign over your island instead of following broad things like fascism and communism like civ 4 where you set your laws yourself . i recommend BOTH. it comes down to the level of control you like in a game.
Ah, so Tropico 3 allows for more micromanagement, I see. I had it recommended by a friend but I just couldn't make up my mind, and I think this points it more in Tropico's favor.
