If you watch it with the Rifftrax commentary, it's actually a great comedy (seriously, it's amazing).
By itself, I've managed to barely watch the 1st one and about half of the 2nd one. I don't mind bad acting/script/effects as long as the movie is entertaining in some way (like Battlefield Earth, for example) but the Twilight series is just boring.

As for the books, I've read fragments online to get an idea about the writing style, and it's pretty bad ("I was 99.9% positive that I'm in love with him").
In the interviews, Stephanie Meyer comes off as kind of a moron, so it's not that surprising that her stories are quite moronic as well.

I've recently watched Warm Bodies (also based on a book for teenage girls), which is basically Twilight with zombies instead of vampires, but that was actually entertaining.
It was probably written by someone competent though and the actors actually looked like they gave a crap.

I haven't read nor watched the books myself, but from the synopsis and movie trailers. Twilight falls into the same trope-ridden stories that appeal to teen girls. A plain girl finds a handsome boy and they mutually fall in love, then she learns her childhood friend has liked her forever. Then both boys fight over her like an animal. I've watched the Mortal Instruments and that was fucking terrible, I'm assuming Twilight is the exact same thing with vampires and werewolves.

Err you may want to reedit your post, "twighlight"?
That would be more editing than Meyer ever done. ZING!

On topic, I read the first book, and had to stop because by chapter 11 my brain was dribbling out my ear.

My sister has them all, so I recently picked up the final book in the series (NO! it's not a saga! Stop using that word) to see if her writing had improved at all, and although I just skimmed the first chapter it was a lot better (she actually learned how to use adjectives on things that weren't Edward), and I feel that if the first book had been written to that standard it probably wouldn't have gotten that much hate (although it was still pretty dry reading)

The movies aren't that terrible if you don't take them too seriously, although I wouldn't want to sit through a full one.

I have a complicated relationship with Twilight. You see, when this thing started to become really big and the trailers for the first film started appearing I thought "That looks shit" and could possibly have carried on my life without ever thinking about it again.

Then Christmas rolls around and I am a pretty hard person to buy for so my mum probably saw the book and thought to herself "hmmm, he likes Buffy The Vampire Slayer, this has a vampire in it. He'll like this." So come Christmas, I open my present to find the first Twilight book. Not being the ungracious sort, I thank my mum but think "I'll probably never read that."

Fast forward to a couple of weeks and I'm waiting for something to come on the TV, which gets cancelled because some sport program is over running. So I don't feel like playing a game, I don't feel like watching a DVD and I spot the book. So I think "what the hell? If it sucks then I can just not read any more." I finished the book in about a day and a half. I don't know if the pages were imprinted with some addictive substance or I am a teenage girl trapped in body of a 30 something man, but I couldn't put it down. So I brought the second book, got about halfway through that and buy the other two books and read those too. The third book being the best as it actually gives some substance to some of the more peripheral characters. I would never say it was great writing or even good...possibly not even decent, but for some reason I enjoyed the books anyway. Again, possibly because I am a teenage girl trapped in a grown mans body...

The films are utter shit though.

Also I've noticed that the latest version of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer DVD box set has the words "The Original Vampire Saga" on them. That made me smile.

I've never read one and have only watched in passing because somewhere it was playing while I was waiting on my friend taking his time in the bathroom.

It doesn't effect me. Just another preteen cash grab with a bad message parents are dumb enough to endorse.

To be honest, regardless of the franchise's actual quality, I got so sick of the constant bashing and "Better love story than Twilight" jokes that went on long after the popularity boom died down that I started to loath the hatedom more than most people loath the fans. Hell, I don't think I ever encountered an actual Twihard, but there was so much of the opposite that it got ridiculously annoying. It's the same thing with Justin Bieber. I only might have heard one his songs twice and never met an actual fan, but the hatedom went on for far too long.

I suggest you have a look at the Nostalgia Critic's editorial video "Is Twilight the Worst Thing Ever?" to get a deeper view of some perspective on it.

I watched one movie and I found it meh. I had no idea who the characters where but I wasn't angry at it for wrecking the monsters, the characters and the connection to Twilight. It was just a fantasy Syfy movie with a budget. But I did recently I got angry at a disaster movie for taking an artistic liberty with science. I have studied science so that can truly piss me off.

Well, no. No, it's not. There's "The Human Centipede", for example. Now THAT is the worst thing ever.

But I did recently I got angry at a disaster movie for taking an artistic liberty with science.
That's pretty much every disaster movie ever. However, if I had to hazard a guess...."The Day After Tomorrow"? That one is really obnoxious with liberty-taking.

I borrowed the first bok from my brother. It was pretty dull, so I didn't finish it. Life's too short.

Warm Bodies wasn't written for teenage girls. While it was marketed and promoted for the YA market, Isaac Marion (the author) apparently never intended for that to happen. Also, calling it 'Twilight with zombies' is really insulting to the book/movie.

OT: Yeah, it's just bad. I read the first one after my English teacher and a fellow student were gushing about it. It was just boring and horrible, I could never understand the hype, I lost a lot of respect for those two, and there is really no reason for that book to be as long as it is.

While the concept for the series is fine (as well as Meyers' other book, The Host, which is better than Twilight but still dull), Meyers' is really not the person to write it, or anything.

But hey, at least there's this:

I had to watch the first three movies for work. The first movie was barely tolerable (awesome credit sequence though), the second was absolute garbage, the third crawled up its own ass and died with a whimsical smile of tongue-in-cheek references to its own stupidity. Haven't watched the ensuing sequels.

Garbage, garbage, garbage.

It was actually called Lava under New York. The scene that annoyed me was apparently having lava underwater while a boat is above causes the boat to somehow explode. The lava from what was shown wasn't nowhere near the boat and the sea wasn't even boiling. That scene could be a metaphor for my suspension of disbelief after that scene.

The first book is dull and I was unimpressed, didn't want to keep reading.

I was never that bothered by it. Even when the craze was greatest, I always was more annoyed by people complaining about it.
Especially when the complaints were really superficial and dumb, like 'vampires don't sparkle'. Yeah, so? These vampires do. There's lot to be criticized in the books (such as how Bella's and Edward's relationship is horrible and how the plots are dumb) but it gets really old really fast when you keep hearing the same minor nitpicks over and over again.

Christ, what kind of job would force you to watch the first three Twilight movies? I'm sure that that qualifies as abuse at the workplace in at least 16 countries.

Depends. The writing is pretty crap, but it's not like it's the only poorly written book in the world. The characters may be flat, but the story is actually fair. So no I wouldn't say it's crap. It's just another phenomenally mediocre book/movie series. The craze around it on both sides IS crap though.

Er mah gerd! I'm the only one who doesn't hate it? Has anyone actually watched teh films? not the books I couldn't read a whole book of that.

There's worse stuff out there guys. Vampires make a more interesting story than your usual high school teenage girl film does.
